The Baja Bash

Preparing for the Baja Bash (the trip north from Mexico to California). They call it “The Bash” because the prevailing winds and waves are from the northwest. So you are basically going uphill (if that makes any sense).

Anchorage at La Cruz

09 December 2014 | La Cruz, Mexico
Pat
We've been enjoying a week of internet here in Paradise Village. Tomorrow we move to the anchorage at La Cruz. We will use Internet Cafe's or the cruiser bar called Philo's to access our email and the internet.

We've been chipping away at "the list" of never ending boat projects. Our water maker developed a leak. I called Spectra and found that crevice corrosion in the high pressure stainless steel piping is a known problem. We ordered a new pipe and fittings. Our friends Shannon and Rob on Whisker Away are coming to town next week on vacation. They offered to bring us the part from California, special delivery!

Another leak we discovered was coming from our stern anchor locker. The locker is basically a box, attached to the inside of the transom. The box drains onto the swim step through a nylon fitting. Turns out there was a pin hole leak in the corner of the box. It only became apparent when we were at sea and the stern took waves from behind us (water entered the fitting, filling the bottom of the box, leaking into the back of the boat). I mixed up some epoxy today and injected it into the hole with a syringe. That should fix it.

There is a cruiser here who has a house on the hill up above La Cruz. He is equipped with a radio that has a power meter attached. After the morning net he offered to do radio checks and compare your radio to others in the area. Turns out we were only putting out 2 of 6 bars on his meter. I cleaned the contacts on the VHF antenna cable between the radio and the base of the mast (I didn't go up the mast to get the one at the top). On Monday I did another radio check and found we were getting all 6 bars on his meter. I was glad we are now putting out full power on our VHF.

The picture of the iguana is one we saw on our dinghy ride up the canal. There are tons of iguana here in Mexico. This one is older and has large spines on his head.
