The Baja Bash

Preparing for the Baja Bash (the trip north from Mexico to California). They call it “The Bash” because the prevailing winds and waves are from the northwest. So you are basically going uphill (if that makes any sense).

Tenicatita Bay

Pat
We left Chamela on Saturday 1-24-15 to make our way to Tenicatita Bay, about 28 NM. There are two places to stop on the way, Paraiso and Careyes. They are both small anchorages. We heard 3 other boats had already anchored in Paraiso before we got there. We heard one boat give up trying to get their anchor set in Paraiso. We chose to continue on to Tenicatita Bay.

I tried my hand at fishing again, hoping to catch a nice Dorado. Our friends on Agave Azul said they catch about 5 Skipjack tuna for every Dorado they land. I decided to try these numbers. Using a “Mexican Flag” lure (looks like a squid with red/green/white feathers) I caught 5 Skipjacks and released them. I switched to a cedar plug (plain wood that looks like a cigar). I caught three more Skipjacks before we arrived in Tenicatita. So much for playing the numbers. It’s not that you can’t eat Skipjack, it’s just not as good as Dorado.

We arrived in Tenicatita about 1530 hours and found quite a few boats in the anchorage. Melodie and I visited Tenicatita by land back in 2007. Melodie and I had won a silent charity auction from Redwood Day School. Our niece Page was a student there back then. We spent a week in a vacation home in the small town of La Manzanilla, which is on the south end of Tenicatita Bay.

Our friends on Diamond Girl arrived shortly after us. They asked us if we’d had any bug problems. We said no, but we’d only arrived 2 hours before them. We missed the hit about bugs, so when the sun went down we were attached by a swarm of mosquitos. It had us scrambling for our bug screens. The first thing on the “to do” list Sunday was to install the metal insect screens on our port lights. We also dug out the more permanent hatch screens for the large hatches and the companionway.

The photo is a selfie of us here in Tenicatita. People had commented we weren’t posting enough photos of us, only landscapes.

We’ll be in Tenicatita for a week or so before moving to Barra De Navidad. The Super Bowl may play into our scheduling.
