The Baja Bash

Preparing for the Baja Bash (the trip north from Mexico to California). They call it “The Bash” because the prevailing winds and waves are from the northwest. So you are basically going uphill (if that makes any sense).

Panga Ride to La Manzanilla

02 February 2015 | Tenicatita Bay
Pat - Raining
We’ve been enjoying the cruising life here in Tenicatita Bay. We’ve been here for over a week now.

There is Bocce ball (Italian bowling?) on the beach most days. You pitch the paluka onto the sand and draw a line with your toe. If your ball rolls into the water, it’s out of play. It’s mostly guys that play Bocce and the gals play Mexican Train (a game using dominos). After a round or two of each game both groups get together at the palapa bar for a beer or two.

There is plenty of wild life here. We’ve been visited by dolphins who like to scratch themselves on our anchor chain. There is always fish jumping or swimming by our boat. We took our dinghy up the estuary that flows into this bay. It’s surrounded by mangrove trees. The locals have chopped away the branches so your boat just fits between the trees. There are crocodiles here, but we didn’t see any. We did see lots of red crabs, birds and butterflies.

Yesterday was Super Bowl Sunday. We got together with five other boats for a shared panga ride over to the village of La Manzanilla. It’s about 3 miles each way. The ride was pretty wet, both because of the rain, and the waves. We arrived a little damp, but in good spirits. We arrived an hour and a half early to try to get “inside seats”. Palapa Joe’s is a restaurant/bar that is open to the weather (it has no back wall) with a garden setting in the back half of the place.
Well 90 minutes early wasn’t early enough and we got a few tables outside in the garden area. They had set up a 36 inch flat screen TV for us. We made it until nearly the end of the second quarter before the rain shorted out the TV.

Our group of 12 people moved our chairs onto the music stage for the ½ time show and remainder of the game. The stage seating worked out well, although we were in the back of the room, we could see over everyone because of the raised platform.

All the boats took the chance to stock up on some fresh vegetables and other supplies while we were in town. There is only a beach bar in Tenicatita, no grocery store.

The ride back after the game was even more of an adventure. This time the rain was really coming down and it was DARK. Our panga driver had a LED headlamp to guide the way. There were no other running lights on the boat. We all made it back to our respective boats. A good time was had by all.
