The Baja Bash

Preparing for the Baja Bash (the trip north from Mexico to California). They call it “The Bash” because the prevailing winds and waves are from the northwest. So you are basically going uphill (if that makes any sense).

Marina Puerto de Navidad

24 February 2015 | Barra de Navidad
Pat - Sunny
We moved from the anchorage in the Lagoon to the Marina at Barra de Navidad yesterday. I took the chance to dive the boat and check our zinc anodes. I had one replaced a few weeks ago and I thought the zinc on our propeller needed changing. Once I got down there I saw there was still quite a bit left.

For those non-boater types the zinc anodes protect the metal bits exposed to salt water. Since they are "less noble" metal, they corrode instead of our propeller or shaft. It's a constant consumable item that we check regularly.

The water here at the marina isn't potable, so we have to get water from Maria, the water lady. She'll sell you 20 liter bottles (5 gallons) delivered to your boat. We ordered 10 bottles. It's not that we couldn't make water with our water maker, it's just that since the water in the lagoon and marina is so dirty, we'd clog our filters too quickly. That along with the dock water not being drinkable, makes 30 cents a gallon drinking water a good deal.

The mouth of the 20 liter bottle is too big for our deck fittings. I know from past experience that a Gatorade bottle makes a great funnel for this purpose. A shout out to the crew of New Moon from the 2007 Baja Ha-Ha who taught me this trick. Thanks Gerald.

It's nice having internet again at the dock. We have a Mexican cell phone for data, but we try to limit it's use. That way we can have internet when we need to check the weather.

Melodie brought back all kinds of goodies from her trip to the SF Bay area. Only problem is that most of the goodies translates into a project for me.

We've been trying to track down a leak in the overhead of our aft head. We think it's the deck fitting that protects the air vent (dorade). This morning's project is to reseal the fitting. The next rain storm will tell us if we are successful.

We see more variety of fish alongside the docks here in the marina than anywhere else we've been.
