The Baja Bash

Preparing for the Baja Bash (the trip north from Mexico to California). They call it “The Bash” because the prevailing winds and waves are from the northwest. So you are basically going uphill (if that makes any sense).

Pat - Raining
Today is Friday November 27, 2015.

We completed our 15 day stay in Marina Fonatur on Tuesday November 17. It was a pretty windy day, but we got back into the water without any problems.

We spent the next three days cleaning the boat. A boat yard is a very dirty place. We stocked up on groceries and got ready to get out of Mazatlan. Just as we were starting to check the weather Hurricane Sandra made an appearance. It is a very late season storm. We were torn between leaving or staying to ride out the storm. We chose to head south toward Banderas Bay. Our friends on Wind Dancer were going to make the passage with us.

We left Mazatlan at about 10:00 am and motored south toward Chacala, about 145 NM to the south. We estimated about 20 hours to make the trip. We had an uneventful trip, checking in by radio with Wind Dancer every two hours. It was hot and muggy, but we had an almost full moon. We arrived outside of Chacala just before dawn. Just in time to see a line of fishing buoys they call "long lines". We used our technique of coasting over the line in neutral. The fishermen came over in their Panga and actually made an opening for Wind Dancer to go through. We got across without any problem.

We got anchored in the bay with a bow and stern anchor. That way our bow stays pointed into the swell and it's much less rolly. We took a nap to recover from the night passage.

Wind Dancer rowed over in their dinghy and we "car pooled" into shore. We took a walk on the beach and had lunch in a little palapa restaurant (photo). We were the only two boats in the anchorage. We would have liked to stay for another night, but rain and thunderstorms were forecast for the following evening.

We left at first light on Wednesday morning 11/26/15 and were on the lookout for more long lines. We found some a few hours later. They often mark the end of the line with a black flag. Sometimes the flag does not mark the end, but the middle of the line. We got around it without any issues. We saw a few other floats (coke bottles tied to a net or line), but no other long lines.

I tried to fish, deploying our hand line off the back with a green colored cedar plug. No luck. Once in Banderas Bay Melodie had to quickly pull in our line due to pangas crossing our stern too closely. Otherwise we'd have caught a panga full of tourists and not a fish.

We arrived at Paradise Village in Nuevo Vallarta around 2:00 pm. We got a slip and got all tucked in before the rain started later that night.
