The Baja Bash

Preparing for the Baja Bash (the trip north from Mexico to California). They call it “The Bash” because the prevailing winds and waves are from the northwest. So you are basically going uphill (if that makes any sense).

Las Hadas

19 February 2016 | Manzanillo
Pat (and Melodie)
Today is Friday February 19 and we are at Las Hadas in Manzanillo Mexico.

We have been here three days. It’s a nice anchorage, but it is small and only holds about a dozen boats. There are 10 boats here now. It calls for tighter anchoring than we prefer. It’s as far south as we will travel this season. When we were looking to buy Starshine, then named Star Dancer, one of the photos the previous owner showed us was the boat anchored here. So we now have our own photo of Starshine at Las Hadas.

We joined up with our friends on Optimus Prime. They went down to Zihuatenajo for Sailfest. We took a taxi into town to restock at the Walmart. We had lunch at a local taco stand. Great cheap tacos. We also stopped by a Starbucks to get some fresh coffee beans. The coffee selection in the grocery stores is no good; mostly instant. There are a few Starbucks in Mexico at the more upscale tourist areas. They look exactly like they do in the states. Never mind the coffee, the bathrooms are wonderful. Now that the cupboards are full again we will start to make our way back north. We don’t have a schedule beyond being back in Banderas Bay (Puerto Vallarta) by the first week of March. Where we go and how long we stay will mostly depend on how many boats are in any particular anchorage we want to visit. Today we want to go to Ensenada Carrizal, but we heard on the SSB radio that there are 7 boats there today. We will stick our noses in to check it out, but if it’s full we will divert to Playa Boquito in Santiago Bay.

The reason for a short stay at Las Hadas is the crazy Jet Ski traffic on the weekend. That and the loud music they will play into the wee hours of the morning. When we swim here we stick close to the boat so we don’t get run over by a jet ski. The water is cooling off a little. Only 83.5 degrees instead of 85.

My day as Net Control for the Amigo Net went well yesterday. I made a few mistakes, and my mouth was dry (reminded me of testifying in court), but is was ok.

Another short blog post, but life is good here.
