Puerto Aventuras, July 2013

It’s been over 3 months since our last update from Mexico and before I start the next blog chapter talking about Cuba, I thought I’d bring you up to speed on our new life in Puerto Aventuras.

It is a hot and sweltering summer’s day, and Marc and Anne have resumed home schooling on the boat. It is a temporary situation, after spending 3 months at the Colegio, the school (and the Learning Centre as a result) closed for the summer holidays until August 19. While the Mexicans use the 7 or so weeks to vacation, we only had 2 weeks off then had to resume work according to the Australian schedule. Besides the freedom between 7.30am and 2.30pm, away from school books and academic concerns, what I miss the most are these dozens golf carts and bikes whizzing around early in the morning, driven by uniform clad kids (some as young as 8) .

P.A has turned out to be a peculiar place: a mixture of all-inclusive resorts, private mansions and condos either owned or rented by expats and wealthy Mexicans, a fresh produce market catering to local residents, a few eating places trying to make a dollar (with mixed results), and closer to our heart, a few locals happy to make new friends. Marc and Anne seem to have found their niches, each commuting between the boat and various friends’ houses (that’s when a gated community comes in handy, we have not had to worry about them AT ALL, if anything odd happens, the security guys know every kid in the estate and will knock on your door!) and making the most of the year we are spending here. Marc is developing his skills as a DJ (can’t wait for his first paying gig!) while Anne is fluent in Spanish, I make her the dedicated translator when we go out!

Life has been fairly static compared to last year. This is due to the fact that the kids are at school during the week and Terry secured the boat solidly for the hurricane season, making it pretty laborious to “untie these docklines” (though not impossible, we’re just plain lazy!) It’s not to say that life is uninteresting: We’ve ventured away on a few excursions around the Yucatan peninsula, to the Chiapas region and Belize. Our favourite week end destination is Tulum, about 80 klm south of PA, a low key resort town with the only seaside ruins in Mexico (which we had to visit back in February, to get the cultural stuff out of the way!) and the most pristine beach which attracts us back time and time again…

And when not on the road, we try to keep fit to make up for the socialising. Staying in one place all this time means we’ve had the time to find our bearings and live like locals, and in my case it is turning into a real culinary adventure. Let’s be honest: Terry is not fond of Mexican food, but the kids and I have fallen in love with it and I am trying to convert him. No joy so far, which I can’t understand, what’s not to like about ceviche, tacos, guacamole, salsas, etc…then again, he keeps telling me French cooking is so much nicer, I can’t argue with that either. So there has been many dinners parties on board, with our new friends enjoying French fare and asking for either cooking lessons, a book or (god forbid) a restaurant to be open.
My answer to it all is finally coming up in the shape of a new blog, part-culinary, part nautical. Wanting to keep the existing Steen Rally as a cruising blog, Galleyvantingaround is my new project, very much focused on cooking on board and featuring experiences, recipes, photos, tips and any food related issues that come to mind! Terry is shaking his head, not only wondering who on earth will be interested in what we eat but also dreading the prospect of having (nearly) every meal served cold after being photographed. I myself worry about taking on such a commitment, but time seems to be on my side right now, so why not? The new blog is in its infancy currently, but anyone interested, please feel free to check it out and leave a comment, being a work in progress I welcome any feedback. As for the cruising blog, I will keep updating it hopefully at a faster pace than in the past….

Puerto Aventuras, Juillet 2013

Notre vie est assez stationnaire comparée a l’an dernier.

2 glorious months, cruising various parts of Fiji. So many different experiences in one country: lush rainforests, colourful indian towns, blue lagoons, traditional villages, great fishing, fancy resorts... And the best part was sharing the cruising with family and friends. Can't beat Fiji with company! Here is a collection of our favourite moments (and there are a few!!!)

Having visitors means putting on our tour guide hat "Voahangy & Co in Mexico", much exploring and eating: ruins, cenotes, beaches, villages, markets,... . I shared Mexican cooking lessons and was repaid with Dutch baking classes from our French guest. We ate a lot of cakes this month! So much sugar, no candies needed for Halloween this year, just parties...

This is the slowest month of the year in Mexico: hurricane threats, hot and humid weather, torrential rains drive the tourists away and confine the rest of us indoors. It poured for 22 days non stop! We still managed a dive (in the rain) for Father's Day, a day of all you can eat and drink at the local resort for Terry's birthday, and as usual lots of cooking and eating. Just on cue, the weather cleared at the end of the month for the arrival of Marie Suzanne, a French girlfriend. So lots of touring and catching up. Celebrated Mexican Independence Day all month long (it seems), eating black beans and pork verde!

Holiday month for everyone: visitors from the USA, kids in and out, parties, US National Day celebration, French National Day celebration, Tulum for a night (bliss...) The start of a new food blog meant a month spent in the galley experimenting. Not much in terms of local food, mostly home cooked French. Chocolate cake anyone?

Not much tourism this month. We finally made the decision to stay for the rest of the year. So it's head down with school, get together with cruising friends ( they're passing thru while we stay behind) and switching to "landlubber's" mode. Resolved to eat at home more often, back to healthier diet.
