Windswept in the Tobago Cays

18 January 2012 | St Lucia
Voahangy
We are back in St Lucia, after 3 glorious weeks in the Grenadines. From Bequia to Petit St Vincent, and all the other islands in between, they're all different and equally beautiful. Over the next week or so, I will do a post describing each of our stops. Today, we start with Stop #1: Tobago Cays. Hope you enjoy the read.

Tobago Cays, Grenadines
Dec 29-31, 2011

We all have dream destinations, and the Tobago Cays is one of these for us. It is to be the highlight of the week; a tall order after Mustique, but still we can’t wait to see for ourselves what the guide books describe as the most picturesque anchorage in the Windward island.

So we leave the protected anchorage of Mustique and sail 15nm south to Tobago Cays (TC) in 25kts easterly winds, choppy seas, and generally unpleasant conditions. Not a good omen I think!

TC is a national park made of a group of small deserted islands: Petit Rameau, Petit Bateau, Baradel, Jamesby and Petit Tabac, protected from the sea by Horseshoe Reef.
With winds gusting over 35 knots we anchor in the cut between Petit Bateau and Petit Rameau, away from the chop but still exposed to winds so noisy it gives us all a head ache. Looking for a better spot we check the main anchorage behind Horseshoe Reef and it is so much worse, not only is it more exposed to wind and swell, but the area is packed with charter boats so we retreat in a hurry!!

For 3 days, the wind blows up to 35 knots making any dinghy excursion really painful. Horseshoe reef is out of reach, the bottom of the turtle-watching area off Baradel’s beach is so stirred up we can’t see a thing. Only the kids enjoy snorkelling, though the visibility is hopeless, I only persist until I finally see a turtle and take photos. That’s it, I’ve done my bit!

SULYNA is staying here for a couple of days, but as they’re anchored in the main section, away from us, it is difficult for the kids to socialise: we won’t let them take the dingy around with that wind.

Just like in Bequia, boat boys ply the Cays. With names like Romeo, Mr Fabulous, Free Willy, they sell everything: lobsters, t-shirt, bread, even beer! We decline offers of a beach barbecues, once again too much wind!

The kids suffer from cabin fever, with Terry and I too windswept and sunburnt to do anything beyond taking the dinghy to a minuscule beach on Petit Rameau which has the merit of being the only protected patch of sand!

I so want to enjoy this place: it is so pretty, it’s easy to see that marine life would be plentiful, but so wish the wind would stop just for one day!

2 glorious months, cruising various parts of Fiji. So many different experiences in one country: lush rainforests, colourful indian towns, blue lagoons, traditional villages, great fishing, fancy resorts... And the best part was sharing the cruising with family and friends. Can't beat Fiji with company! Here is a collection of our favourite moments (and there are a few!!!)

Having visitors means putting on our tour guide hat "Voahangy & Co in Mexico", much exploring and eating: ruins, cenotes, beaches, villages, markets,... . I shared Mexican cooking lessons and was repaid with Dutch baking classes from our French guest. We ate a lot of cakes this month! So much sugar, no candies needed for Halloween this year, just parties...

This is the slowest month of the year in Mexico: hurricane threats, hot and humid weather, torrential rains drive the tourists away and confine the rest of us indoors. It poured for 22 days non stop! We still managed a dive (in the rain) for Father's Day, a day of all you can eat and drink at the local resort for Terry's birthday, and as usual lots of cooking and eating. Just on cue, the weather cleared at the end of the month for the arrival of Marie Suzanne, a French girlfriend. So lots of touring and catching up. Celebrated Mexican Independence Day all month long (it seems), eating black beans and pork verde!

Holiday month for everyone: visitors from the USA, kids in and out, parties, US National Day celebration, French National Day celebration, Tulum for a night (bliss...) The start of a new food blog meant a month spent in the galley experimenting. Not much in terms of local food, mostly home cooked French. Chocolate cake anyone?

Not much tourism this month. We finally made the decision to stay for the rest of the year. So it's head down with school, get together with cruising friends ( they're passing thru while we stay behind) and switching to "landlubber's" mode. Resolved to eat at home more often, back to healthier diet.
