One last bridge before Washington DC

17 October 2012 | Edgewater, MD
Voahangy
Washington, June 24-July 8, 2012

June 24th, 3am, and I hear Terry pulling up anchor.

A few days earlier, we read the fine print in the cruising guide book and realised that the span of the last bridge before Washington DC, the Woodrow Wilson Memorial Bridge, wasn’t high enough for our mast. After, the drama of Quantico power lines, I started to panic, but on further investigation, all that was necessary was to request a bridge opening 12 hours in advance. It sounded quite easy, considering that the bridge carries 2 major highways ( I-95 and I-495) spanning across the Potomac River between the city of Alexandria in Virginia and Oxon Hill in Maryland. By Interstate standards, all bridges in the US Interstate Highway System must be fixed so as not to interfere with traffic flow, however a handful of movable bridges remain, the Wilson drawbridge being one of them. The original 6 lane structure was opened in 1961 but had to be extended in the 2000s to 12 lanes and the span increased to 75 feet (24 metres) to restrict the openings from 260 to 60 per year. Still, in order to reduce the inconvenience to traffic, the opening hours are restricted from midnight to 5am. Bracing myself for a major exercise (and expense), I called the bridge attendant, Steve, who very nicely told me that would not be a problem but really he needed at least 48 hours as maintenance work was being done on the bridge. So, the date was set for Sunday morning all that was required was to show up on time, no paperwork needed and no charge!

It was a perfect morning, started in the still darkness of the Potomac River; we approached the bridge led by the lights of the Washington monument in the distance. The early Sunday morning traffic was very light and as we were the only boat transiting, we hoped to be through in a few minutes. We did, and I can’t describe the feeling when the bridge opened up revealing a clear path towards the city: we passed the old town of Alexandria and Ronal Reagan Airport on our port (left), army base quarters on our starboard, then as I turned back towards the bridge, I gasped. One of the road panels was still up, obviously something was wrong. The sun was now up and vehicles were lined across the whole width of the bridge and beyond. As we turned towards the Washington Channel past Hains Point, a good 30 minutes later, I caught a last glimpse of the broken down bridge and the traffic jam, feeling bad and thinking “So much for trying to reduce the inconvenience!”. Terry thought it was funny though; just think that VOAHANGY brought Washington to a standstill!!

PS: This little incident didn’t make the news, and the bridge did close after all (don’t know how long it took though).

Washington, 24 Juin 2012

2 glorious months, cruising various parts of Fiji. So many different experiences in one country: lush rainforests, colourful indian towns, blue lagoons, traditional villages, great fishing, fancy resorts... And the best part was sharing the cruising with family and friends. Can't beat Fiji with company! Here is a collection of our favourite moments (and there are a few!!!)

Having visitors means putting on our tour guide hat "Voahangy & Co in Mexico", much exploring and eating: ruins, cenotes, beaches, villages, markets,... . I shared Mexican cooking lessons and was repaid with Dutch baking classes from our French guest. We ate a lot of cakes this month! So much sugar, no candies needed for Halloween this year, just parties...

This is the slowest month of the year in Mexico: hurricane threats, hot and humid weather, torrential rains drive the tourists away and confine the rest of us indoors. It poured for 22 days non stop! We still managed a dive (in the rain) for Father's Day, a day of all you can eat and drink at the local resort for Terry's birthday, and as usual lots of cooking and eating. Just on cue, the weather cleared at the end of the month for the arrival of Marie Suzanne, a French girlfriend. So lots of touring and catching up. Celebrated Mexican Independence Day all month long (it seems), eating black beans and pork verde!

Holiday month for everyone: visitors from the USA, kids in and out, parties, US National Day celebration, French National Day celebration, Tulum for a night (bliss...) The start of a new food blog meant a month spent in the galley experimenting. Not much in terms of local food, mostly home cooked French. Chocolate cake anyone?

Not much tourism this month. We finally made the decision to stay for the rest of the year. So it's head down with school, get together with cruising friends ( they're passing thru while we stay behind) and switching to "landlubber's" mode. Resolved to eat at home more often, back to healthier diet.
