Anne and the dolphins

Puerto Aventuras - October 25, 2013

Totally overwhelmed with admin work (catching up after weeks of putting if off!) and cooking experiments, writing posts has been somewhat less of a priority these last couple of weeks. Looking thru the vault of drafts, I have many stories waiting for a little (or a lot) of TLC before seeing the light of a publishing day. Then checking on some of Anne's latest school unit, I came across one of her previous journal entries (one of her Year 4 subjects) and thought I would share it with you. You could say I am outsourcing, but this sailing trip is about the kids just as much as about me.

Puerto Aventuras is home to 2 Dolphinariums, marine attraction parks with dolphins, manatees and sea lions, kept in captivity for the viewing and playing pleasure of tourists like us. After encountering hundreds of these animals in the wild, Terry and I don't really like to see them confined to pools, in which they seem to swim around in circle. Watching the movie "The Cove" made it worse for me, and I can't help but feel sad whenever I walk past the pool and one of the dolphins stares back with these huge black eyes. But that's me, and no amount of environmental-animal welfare-kind of talk could dampen Anne's enthusiasm at the idea of living amongst her favourite marine animals. The first thing she asked for, when we arrived, was a swim with the dolphins, and obsessed so much about it, we eventually let her have the experience as an early birthday present (that was back in the days when we were only supposed to stay in Mexico for 3 weeks. By the time her birthday came in May, she was on to another experience, another post...). So here follows, Anne's day with the dolphins (her original entry included photos, which I can't include in the post, but you will find in the Gallery " January Happenings")

The All Sea Life Circle Plus

On January 26, I went swimming with dolphins. I was so excited, and I couldn't wait to start.

It started at 1:00 pm. Once I swam in the water, the trainer said that their names were Jupiter and Star. He asked me to put my hands on top of each other, and to put them under Jupiter's chin and to kiss it.

My second activity was the handshake. I held my hands up, the dolphin jumped out of the water, and I touched its fins.

After that activity, we were given free time with the dolphins. We were all allowed to feel the dolphins; we also made them sing and make funny sounds, Jupiter and Star then splashed us with water.

My 3rd last activity was the "Hug". I needed to put my hands like a cradle underwater, and the dolphin would slide in my arms like a baby.

My next activity was the clock. I would put one hand on my chest and the other one out so the dolphin could chase it, like a clock.

Our 5th last activity was called the "foot push". The trainer told me to swim out to the end of the pool and to be in the Super Man position. The dolphins then would push my feet to the other end.

My favourite activity was called the dorsal tow. Jupiter and Star would swim to me, I would hold on to their dorsal fins and they would pull me forward.

The very last activity was called Ball Target. The trainer gave you a ball, and you had to hold it up, so one of the dolphins would touch it with their nose.

After the dolphins, we walked to the nurse sharks and stingrays enclosure.
The person who looks after the nurse sharks and stingrays told us to get a snorkelling mask, and we swam around the pool and looked at them. At the end, the carer held a nurse shark for us to touch and it felt like sand paper.

The next animal was the manatee. The trainer gave us some lettuce. She told me that to feed a manatee I needed to put my knee up so it could hold on to it, then I tickled its nose and gave it the lettuce leaf. I fed Romeo, Juliet and the baby manatee. About 20 minutes later, we started snorkelling around the manatees, stingrays and rocks.

Everyone swam out of the pool at about 3:00pm and it was time for me to go to the Sea Lions. I was the only one there so it wasn't that much fun. The first activity was free time. I felt the Sea Lion, it jumped around me and I patted her some more.

We then took pictures with the Sea lion. The first one was when she did a handstand.
For the 2nd picture, she put one fin on my shoulder. A sea lion is very heavy when it leans on your shoulder.

After all the pictures were taken, the trainer let me feed her with sardines and he taught me how to make it jump (the sea lion not the sardine.)

At the end of the All Sea Life Circle, I got lunch, and I went to the gift shop to look at the photos. We didn't buy any because mum already took some.
After this exhausting day I went home, I relaxed and thought about how much fun I had.

It was an awesome day!

Puerto Aventuras - 25 Octobre, 2013

The All Sea Life Circle Plus

On a débuté a 13h.

Ensuite on a joué à l'horloge.

Au début c'était « free time ».

2 glorious months, cruising various parts of Fiji. So many different experiences in one country: lush rainforests, colourful indian towns, blue lagoons, traditional villages, great fishing, fancy resorts... And the best part was sharing the cruising with family and friends. Can't beat Fiji with company! Here is a collection of our favourite moments (and there are a few!!!)

Having visitors means putting on our tour guide hat "Voahangy & Co in Mexico", much exploring and eating: ruins, cenotes, beaches, villages, markets,... . I shared Mexican cooking lessons and was repaid with Dutch baking classes from our French guest. We ate a lot of cakes this month! So much sugar, no candies needed for Halloween this year, just parties...

This is the slowest month of the year in Mexico: hurricane threats, hot and humid weather, torrential rains drive the tourists away and confine the rest of us indoors. It poured for 22 days non stop! We still managed a dive (in the rain) for Father's Day, a day of all you can eat and drink at the local resort for Terry's birthday, and as usual lots of cooking and eating. Just on cue, the weather cleared at the end of the month for the arrival of Marie Suzanne, a French girlfriend. So lots of touring and catching up. Celebrated Mexican Independence Day all month long (it seems), eating black beans and pork verde!

Holiday month for everyone: visitors from the USA, kids in and out, parties, US National Day celebration, French National Day celebration, Tulum for a night (bliss...) The start of a new food blog meant a month spent in the galley experimenting. Not much in terms of local food, mostly home cooked French. Chocolate cake anyone?

Not much tourism this month. We finally made the decision to stay for the rest of the year. So it's head down with school, get together with cruising friends ( they're passing thru while we stay behind) and switching to "landlubber's" mode. Resolved to eat at home more often, back to healthier diet.
