January Guests

05 February 2014 | Puerto Aventuras
Voahangy
Every year, January means school holidays, trips away and visitors. No exception this time. No sooner had we been back from France that Terry’s daughter Shelley and her partner Jai arrived for a week in the sun. Then the day of their departure, a couple of friends from Cairns landed from NYC for a 10-days stay. All of this had been planned a long time ago, so the changeover was more organized than it sounds, and as busy as it was, we all enjoyed having guests after months of quiet times.

I mentioned previously how different guests have different interests. I saved some of last year’s posts telling of our visits to some ruins and historical towns (Coba, Palenque, Valladolid and San Cristobal de la Casa), waiting to update them with possible input from our visitors. As it turned out, neither Shelley, Jai, David nor Denise had the time or inclination to drive for hours to look at ruins or old cities. In both cases, the main items on the agenda were to catch up with each other, relax at the beach, have fun eating out, and squeeze in some cultural excursions if time allowed. I am not sure if this is an “Australian thing”, since some of our French guests earlier thought nothing of spending hours if not days on such excursions.
Admittedly, 8 days is barely enough to see all the sights in the Riviera Maya, even less when the weather is temperamental as it was during Shelley and Jai’s stay. So, we showed everyone our favourite spots, most of them within 30 minutes from the boat: Playa del Carmen and its busy shopping strip, Tulum beach and ruins, snorkelling and paddle boarding around Puerto, zip lining at X-plor, drink and eat all day at Xel-Ha…Did we do everything twice? You bet we did, with a slight variation: movie days and cenote diving for the young ones (Shelley and Jai), more shopping for the older crowd and a fantastic day out sailing with some of our Puerto friends (they were lucky, the weather fined up that week!)
Playa del Carmen was hosting the BPM festival, an annual electronic music event. We “lost” Marc to it for a few days, though we joined in a couple of times to check out the scene. Interestingly, we all enjoyed the party atmosphere (to describe it as wild is an understatement), but after a couple of hours concluded we were too old for it (or at least our ears were) and retreated to quieter streets for a local dinner.

Terry and I joke that if we stayed in Mexico any longer we could rename ourselves “Voahangy’s Holiday Tours”!

One common thread throughout these 2 ½ weeks were a love of Coronas and margaritas, hungry appetites for Mexican cooking ( though even Jai admits you can only eat so many nachos!) and generally the excitement of spending time with dear ones not seen for years.

And as for these old posts, without any further opportunity to travel inland any more, I’ll just have to publish them somehow…Stay tuned!

2 glorious months, cruising various parts of Fiji. So many different experiences in one country: lush rainforests, colourful indian towns, blue lagoons, traditional villages, great fishing, fancy resorts... And the best part was sharing the cruising with family and friends. Can't beat Fiji with company! Here is a collection of our favourite moments (and there are a few!!!)

Having visitors means putting on our tour guide hat "Voahangy & Co in Mexico", much exploring and eating: ruins, cenotes, beaches, villages, markets,... . I shared Mexican cooking lessons and was repaid with Dutch baking classes from our French guest. We ate a lot of cakes this month! So much sugar, no candies needed for Halloween this year, just parties...

This is the slowest month of the year in Mexico: hurricane threats, hot and humid weather, torrential rains drive the tourists away and confine the rest of us indoors. It poured for 22 days non stop! We still managed a dive (in the rain) for Father's Day, a day of all you can eat and drink at the local resort for Terry's birthday, and as usual lots of cooking and eating. Just on cue, the weather cleared at the end of the month for the arrival of Marie Suzanne, a French girlfriend. So lots of touring and catching up. Celebrated Mexican Independence Day all month long (it seems), eating black beans and pork verde!

Holiday month for everyone: visitors from the USA, kids in and out, parties, US National Day celebration, French National Day celebration, Tulum for a night (bliss...) The start of a new food blog meant a month spent in the galley experimenting. Not much in terms of local food, mostly home cooked French. Chocolate cake anyone?

Not much tourism this month. We finally made the decision to stay for the rest of the year. So it's head down with school, get together with cruising friends ( they're passing thru while we stay behind) and switching to "landlubber's" mode. Resolved to eat at home more often, back to healthier diet.
