Going to the other side...Pacific here we come

05 April 2014 | Colon, Panama
Voahangy
Most of you know that we operate on our own. Yep, we have no crew. While we like to have family and friends on board, sharing our fantastic lifestyle, we always found that our privacy was more important than the convenience of having paid help. This week, however, was one of these rare occasions when I wish we had crew.

It started with us going to the fuel dock for topping up. We only needed 600 litres of fuel, to top up the main tanks and fill up our auxiliary bladders. It was supposed to be a piece of cake, except that the wind was blowing strongly, the guy at the dock would not tie up our lines as instructed and we ended up having 3 attempts before securing the boat to the fuel dock. All this in full view of the rest of the marina and anyone who knows Terry will imagine how embarrassed he was to make such a display ("It's not that difficult!") So we set out to fill out the bladders on the top deck (as extra to the 1300 litres for the upcoming Pacific crossing) and the nozzle would not fit our hose properly letting in more air than it was supposed to. When it came close to full, diesel gushed out of the hose, splashing all over me and the deck! And not a small amount I might add, enough to soak my clothes and shoes and worry about walking around anyone with a match or a cigarette. The whole exercise took about 1 hour, with the local operator having a chuckle as he handed us a bottle of detergent to wash out all the fuel of the deck (must be a regular occurrence!), while I ended up soaking the clothes in a bucket full of detergent (never mind the boat shoes they're a gonner, I need to shop for new ones!)

Then came the time to attend to our gennaker which we had repaired back in Fort Lauderdale 18 months ago and stowed away since without using it. We attempted to set it up yesterday, but unbeknownst to us, it was entangled and completely flogged itself on the way up the mast. A friend pointed to a cut portion on the sail, which required fixing. Better finding that out here rather than the middle of the ocean (thanks Fred!) So we had to take it down, get it off the boat somehow (boy these things are so heavy and cumbersome to carry!) in a trolley and spread it out on the grass, with the corners held firmly by Marc's gym weights. Luckily the cut was small, and after applying a good amount of sticky sail tape, we rolled it and hauled it back onto the deck where it is sitting until the wind drops enough for us to hoist it up again (don't want to make a spectacle of ourselves!)

And that is for what Terry and I worked on together. We've had our separate list of chores ( sorry tasks!) as long as my arm. His reads like this: engines maintenance, set up spare fuel tanks, service watermaker, repair cabin fans, check rigging, refill gas bottles,...Mine is like that: laundry, inventory and provisioning, check kids schooling and upload work, banking, cook and freeze, liaise with agent for transit...if only we had crew. Even the socialising feels like work as we are surrounded by like- minded cruisers, all planning to go thru the canal at some point, and conversations consist of information exchange. After many days of preparations, waiting for officials and notice of transit date, we gave up on our original plan to visit Panama City overnight. The boat would have been safe in the marina, so would the kids, who didn't want to see another old City. But we're just too tired. Had enough of crowds, shops, cars, bad service. On the positive side we have met a few cruising families here, so the company has been good and the kids are looking forward to cruise along with a few new friends going the same route as we are. That gives everyone something to look forward in the next passage into the Pacific.

So it's official, we are leaving the marina this afternoon (Saturday April 5th), picking up a couple of line handlers and traversing 3 locks before setting reaching the Pacific. As of Monday we will officially be on the way home!

PS: Apologies for my updates being out of sync again, and no French translation for this one. I was full of good intentions to post the San Blas story and photos, but just ran out of time. At least I will have plenty of time to write during the next crossing. Stay tuned!

Restez branches !

2 glorious months, cruising various parts of Fiji. So many different experiences in one country: lush rainforests, colourful indian towns, blue lagoons, traditional villages, great fishing, fancy resorts... And the best part was sharing the cruising with family and friends. Can't beat Fiji with company! Here is a collection of our favourite moments (and there are a few!!!)

Having visitors means putting on our tour guide hat "Voahangy & Co in Mexico", much exploring and eating: ruins, cenotes, beaches, villages, markets,... . I shared Mexican cooking lessons and was repaid with Dutch baking classes from our French guest. We ate a lot of cakes this month! So much sugar, no candies needed for Halloween this year, just parties...

This is the slowest month of the year in Mexico: hurricane threats, hot and humid weather, torrential rains drive the tourists away and confine the rest of us indoors. It poured for 22 days non stop! We still managed a dive (in the rain) for Father's Day, a day of all you can eat and drink at the local resort for Terry's birthday, and as usual lots of cooking and eating. Just on cue, the weather cleared at the end of the month for the arrival of Marie Suzanne, a French girlfriend. So lots of touring and catching up. Celebrated Mexican Independence Day all month long (it seems), eating black beans and pork verde!

Holiday month for everyone: visitors from the USA, kids in and out, parties, US National Day celebration, French National Day celebration, Tulum for a night (bliss...) The start of a new food blog meant a month spent in the galley experimenting. Not much in terms of local food, mostly home cooked French. Chocolate cake anyone?

Not much tourism this month. We finally made the decision to stay for the rest of the year. So it's head down with school, get together with cruising friends ( they're passing thru while we stay behind) and switching to "landlubber's" mode. Resolved to eat at home more often, back to healthier diet.
