Zakinthos Island

We were quite looking forward to sail to the Ionion's southern most island, Zakinthos.
Zakinthos as well as being mountainous has an abundance of plains that that flow over onto Lagana Beach, famous for its loggerhead turtles.
In fact, approaching Zakinthos from Cephalonia becomes a bit confusing. The low plains on the island make it look like two islands when some way distant. I remember looking at the paper chart and the plotter trying to make sense of it. Once you see the contours it all clicks.
Anyway, it was a big day to get there with very little breeze. We left Vathi on Ithaca at around 07:00 and arrived at Port Zakinthos at around 15:00hrs. An uneventful sail really. We were going to sail onto Lagana Beach and anchor at Ormos Kerri where the turtles are supposed to frequent, but it was going to take another 3 hours minimum so ended up at The Port. To our surprise Mark and Ed turned up in Take Five and docked near us. It was great to see them.
The town itself is not unattractive but it is very tourist orientated, packed with people, boats, ferries and all manner of water craft. Far too busy for us in any case. It has been mentioned that there are far too many slab sided reinforced concrete buildings with too little detail and empathy for the aesthetics of the town pre '53 earthquake period.
Also, our next door neighbours at home, Jacki, Dan and their boys had also arrived there from an extensive holiday in Europe. We had organised to meet up with them at Kerri Beach where they had booked an apartment
