Zakinthos, Kerri Beach
5 August.
On this day we departed for the National Marine Park -Zakinthos
It was in my mind going to be a highlight, a place where they protect and nurture the amazing loggerhead turtles. These are huge turtles and are not uncommon in the Ionion south of Preveza. They are often about a meter across and studded with barnacles. Their breeding ground is Lagana Beach.
The National park has strict guidelines about water traffic and anchoring in Kolpos Lagana, so we were made ourselves familiar with the rules so as not to upset these huge animals.
All we can say is that upon arrival, we were extremely disappointed with the management or lack of of this finite attraction. This blog has been written to keep our families and friends updated of our travels, and in the main avoids writing opinionated editorials. Sabrina is going to put write a separate section on her feelings, but compared to expectations, we were extremely disappointed.
Here is an excerpt from the Greek Waters Pilot. Quote "Now the sea area is effectively policed it is to be hoped that the Beach development will be managed as well so the turtles get a chance to breed safely without interference from the lager louts who tend to inhabit parts of this resort area. Kolpos Lagana may be better policed now, but sadly the same cannot be said for the beaches. By day almost every square meter of the main turtle egg laying beaches are covered with sunbathing bodies, and by night lights and noise from the hotels pollute the bay. There seems to be greater demand in selling cuddly turtles than providing protection for the real ones. What are we doing to these poor creatures?...
