Lake pleasant

19 October 2009
Ross
Another test sail on lake pleasant. We went out for two nights and one day motoring and sailing around a bizarre landscape of artificial lake in the desert swarming with pontoon boats. the massive boat ramp you can see in the background of this photo is just one of many five lane wide boat launches that help this lake get as swarmed as possible on weekends; in one all American moment we witnessed a full bus sized camper towing a thirty foot cigarette boat do a u-turn on the boat ramp with room to spare. lake pleasant
SULA performed as expected, like a very small boat with a lot weight in expedition gear weighting her down. we sailed about at four and a half knots upwind and hit 5.4 knots downwind at one point; fairly respectable speeds for a boat this size rigged with as many provisions as she has. She rows at about 1.7 knots (that's right we have oars) and motors at nearly six knots full throttle.

About:

Zak Zak is a twenty two year old degree candidate at Prescott College in Arizona. [...]

Sailing Ross made the unfortunate decision at the age of 16 to buy a sailboat with the money he had saved up for a car; he has rarely arrived on time since. Amazingly, despite his transportation handicap, he graduated from Green Mountain College (on time) in 2007 and has spent the time since holding down steady jobs.
