St. Lucia

On May 26th, we made the passage from Martinique to St Lucia. We had the excitement of being escorted by a pod of dolphins and we saw a large pod of whales, possibly pygmy or pilot. We easily cleared customs in Rodney Bay. We met up with our friends on Challenger, Tracey and Jerry. Tracy told us about the World Twenty 20 cricket matches being played on the island. We decided to go to the warm up matches on Tuesday between Zimbabwe and Australia and West Indies and Pakistan. We completed the day having dinner with Tracy and Jerry at Cafe' Ole and some topped it all off with ice cream.

The next day we found the Super J Mall and saw some of the Pakistani players having lunch in Subway and Burger King. The mall was made a complete success by the purchase of several pair of needed flip flops, we had a blow out in The Saints, and a pair of shorts. We had a nice evening and dinner at Spinnakers restaurant with several other boats in the marina and anchorage: Challenger, Seabatical, Heatwave, Wild Cat and Sunshine were in attendance.

We were able to get ground seats for one of the official cricket matches on Sunday, India vs. South Africa and Australia vs. Pakistan. The day started at 8:30 and ended around 5:30. It was a long, hot day but we had a good time and enjoyed the matches. Tracy from Challenger went with us. She is from the UK and plays cricket, so her information is very valuable. After the cricket matches wrapped up for the weekend the jazz festival started. The island has been filled with the sounds of jazz and all kinds of music and celebrating.

The entire crew of North Star had haircuts and the adults had great massages with Debra near Island Water World.

We motored to Castries on May 7. It was very crowded with busy streets filled with new and old shops and a small mall and two decent grocery stores. We are looking for two headsets for Uniden walkie talkies and they are impossible to find here. We tried to drown out the music from shore as we drifted off to sleep. We will head to Soufriere area tomorrow.

Enjoyed scenic views down the coast from Castries to Soufriere. Picked up mooring ball at the Bat Caves with assistance from Garfield, a young boat boy that looked to be around Tim's age. We took the dinghy to town to try and figure out some inland adventures. We were aggressively assisted by people wanting to take lines and watch dinghy for us. We walked around town for an hour or so and were asked for money by people ages 7 to 75. We decided to go to the Hummingbird Hotel to see if we could arrange a tour. The girls at front desk were very helpful and helped us schedule a tour with Nicholi on Monday. Nicholi even came up to the hotel to meet us and plan the days events. On the way back to the boat we looked around the bay. We drove right up to the edge of the bat cave and we could see and hear thousands of bats moving around in the crevice. Around six PM we were greeted again by Garfield to see if we needed assistance, a man selling fruit and the mooring fee collector. The swells came in for the night and we had to lay sideways in the bed so we can stay in place.

We met Nicholi at 9 am for our tour. We headed to the Sulphur Springs area first. As we approached the springs we could smell the sulfur. We went to an area by the springs and watched a short video on volcanoes and then headed to view the sulfur springs. The area around the springs was barren with minimal plant life. After our viewing we walked down to the mud baths guaranteed to make you 10 years younger. We all slathered up in the hot, thick, smelly black mud and posed for photos. We were told the showers were not working and we had to rinse in the sulfur water running down from the springs. The major problem with this was it was so hot we could only stand a few minutes and your skin was beet red. We finally got most of the dark mud off. Several days later and many showers it is still somewhere buried under your toenails. We then went to a Botanical Garden and the Diamond Baths. The baths were originally built by Louis the 16th for his troops. The waterfall was a scene in two movies: Romancing the Stone and Superman when he flew along the Pitons to pick Lois a flower from the garden by the waterfall.

The next stop was a Ladera Resort for lunch at their restaurant called Dasheen. The views were amazing. One of the most breathtaking we have seen so far. We all enjoyed the view and a cold drink. Michael wanted to take a photo with the local beer, called a Piton, with the huge Pitons in the background. We enjoyed a great lunch, Tuna which was the catch of the day. We then headed to one more waterfalls not far out of town. The waterfalls in Dominica were so majestic that the waterfalls we saw in St. Lucia paled in comparison.

The next day we dove a site called Coral Garden with Chester with Action Dive Adventures. The dive was nice and the coral was beautiful. We saw more golden crinoids here than we have ever seen in all our years of diving.

We plan to sail to Bequia around 4 AM tomorrow morning.
