Continuing on we came to the most famous landmark on Eleuthera...the Glass Window. This is the narrowest part of the island, a thin, high rocky spine dividing the wild Atlantic Ocean and the shallow Exuma Sound. Years ago there used to be a natural rock bridge along this ridge, connecting the north and south parts of Eleuthera. But the Atlantic waves smashed the bridge, leaving a gaping breach, where the huge waves break and send foam over the rocks and into the sound. A manmade bridge was built to reconnect the island, but in 1991 a rogue wave knocked this bridge 7 feet to the west and had to be rebuilt! We parked the cars and walked out onto the latest bridge, which looked quite substantial! With the strong easterly wind, the Atlantic was very wild with huge breaking waves that did indeed come crashing with great force through the Glass Window crevasse!
