Sailing with Celestial's Tripp

We are a Tripp 47 racing boat turned cruiser that we bought in Maine in 2009. We sailed it through the Panama Canal and up to Seattle then back to Mexico and over to Hawaii in 2012.

Celestial sails again to Molokai

12 February 2016 | Kaunakakai, Molokai i

Monday 2/8/16 After cleaning and putting away all the junk on deck, we sailed out of Kewalo at 10:30am and motored out toward Diamond Head. We put up the old main, double reefed and the #3 and started to fly on a loose beat. The channel was somewhat rough but the big swell was on the beam. The sun was shinning as we heeled 20-25 degrees going upwind at 8 knots. The wind picked up as we approached Molokai and we were smoking at 9 knots and surfing over 10, still beating but now the big swell was aft of the beam Whoo Hoo.

We arrived in Kaunakakai just after 17:00 and anchored in very calm flat water in 14 feet. Our average was just under 8 knots and it was a great but difficult first sail. I am suffering with my sore shoulder so I wasn't as nimble and things were flying loose down below as we remarked, 'Oops, forgot about that one'.

Wednesday was the big swell day so we were glad to be in a safe southern harbor and now today, Friday, winds are gusting to 25 knots and 'we haven't experienced this for a very long time'. We were thankful to only have one other boat to share the anchorage with. A fair amount of boats are using the pier spots but we don't mind anchoring out.

Molokai has a pretty good bus system and its donation only. We used it yesterday to go as far East as we could go and checked out Pukoo fire station, the beach and a cool private lagoon. We made sure to see two churches built in the 1870s by Father Damien. He is known for giving his life working with lepers but before that he planted these churches!

Our plan is to sail to Maui hopefully on Sunday. We hope to entertain Mainland friends next Friday.
