Against the Wind, Part II
11 April 2010 | Walburg Creek, GA
We left before 8:00AM with our traveling buddies, Tropical Breeze, in the lead. We were trying to catch the high tide at the northern entrance of the river. Tropical Breeze, with a draft of only 4 ft and two hulls to settle on if we did hit low water, agreed to lead the way. There were some rumors that the entrance had shoaled to impassability. If that were the case, we would have to retrace our steps to the southern end. We cleared the entrance with 5 ft of water to spare!!
The rest of the day was like the previous, slogging to windward. The worst was Sapelo Sound. It has a long NE fetch so it was choppy and our progress was slow. At 3-4 kts, it takes a while to go 6 miles. A long while. Apparently too long a while for Mr Murphy. As we were motoring into our anchorage, he sprung a leak. This time he got the cushions, not my sock, not sure which is worse. At any rate, I quickly escorted him to the front of the boat and after a little hesitation, he finally, finally, used a stanchion as a relief station. With much praise, the poor little guy went and went and went. I think he must have been too busy chasing squirrels at the park this morning to attend properly to his duties. No real harm done and after it was over and he'd been thoroughly praised, he seemed quite pleased with himself. If only he will remember that this is permissible behavior in the future.
By 5:30 the hook was down, shore duty was taken care of, and we were sipping adult beverages in the cockpit.
As you can plainly see by Joanne and Jim's expressions, getting in and out of these shoaled-in anchorages can be a hair-raising experience.
