Day of Bridges
15 January 2008 | Daytona Beach, FL
What a beautiful day. This section changed quickly from trailers to mega-mansions. One side of the bank was beautiful marsh and the other side was often built to the limit. I guess that's the story of FL today. We are starting to see lots of birdies including skimmers, snowy egrets in breeding plumage, and hundreds of pelicans.
There is bridge after bridge in this section, at least 4 that opened. The most humorous was Crescent Beach Bridge. We were the first in a line of 3 sailboats. We requested an opening and the 2nd two boats failed to respond to repeated calls from the bridge tender. So, he closed the bridge right after us. When the boats then got on the radio he quoted CFRxx and reminded them that they should be monitoring their radios and that they have to request an opening. Later we heard of 2 boats aground in the next inlet. Had to be the same guys. It was a tricky turn but not that bad as long as you paid attention. Oh well, some days just don't go as planned.
