COME WITH ME ABOARD S/V CHRISTA FOR A RIDE AROUND THE BLUE PLANET STARTING SEPTEMBER 2007
Jani Me and My Five Head
Capt Chris, sunny and hot

Two worlds collided yesterday here in central Florida. I met the lovely Jani in Luperon Dominican Republic some months back while she was crewing aboard SV Another Adventure. She cruised aboard Another Adventure taking pretty much the same route I did aboard Christa. She recently came back to Florida after jumping ship in Puerto Rico. She's been bitten mightly by the sailing bug. It happens!

So it was tons of fun to meet up with Jani halfway between my folks place near Ocala and Jani's base of operations in Clearwater. We had a great day, dining at the Tiki Bar and checking out the sights in Clermont. It's funny how things unfurl. The last time I saw Jani was on the dreaded day we all, the whole gaggle of boats who were waiting for weather in Luperon, launched out into difficult weather. Many of us became separated, some of us were sea sick, just about all of us had gear break, some of us lost anchors.....but we all made it safely to Puerto Rico. So that is what I mean by how things unfurl. Just by happenstance Jani and I are in the same neighborhood. When you see a fellow cruiser enter port you tend to get excited and in this case, doesn't matter that we were on terra firma. Actually we were on a lake.

In other happening, I've been hanging at my Mom and Dad's for about a week now. Just enjoying myself, running, hanging out at the pool and generally not doing much. But tomorrow Dad and I will make the drive up to Conn as my Mom was on the advance team via aircraft. All is well in my world! Thanks for reading.

Damn, we left Sanibel yesterday and drove 14 hours to NC. I wish we had known you were in FL. We would have made a special stop to meet you. We were at my dad's house for a week. He is in stage 4 of PSP, and needed some assistance. We have been in FL for the past week. Maybe next time. It sounds like you are having a great time Chris. She looks like a great 1st mate to me.

Marine Corp Marathon...I'm In
Capt Chris, sunny in the 80's

Well I am officially registered for the "People's Marathon" known better as the Marine Corp Marathon. The graphic is tough to see, but it is the course that swirls its way through our nations capital. This will be my first marathon.

I do have an issue as it pertains to hurricane's. If a hurricane is on the radar during the period of time I will be leaving Puerto Rico to run, I will need to do the responsible thing and not leave Christa to chance. But the race is October the 26th, which is the latter part of the h-season but still well within the season.

So I still need to put together a plan in terms of sponsorship and all that. Last August I ran a 10K on Cape Cod and raised about $2,000 for Dana Farber Cancer Foundation. As I said before, when one is as healthy and lucky as I, I think it a duty to curtail the amount of moaning and give back while you can.

On another note I'm flying back to the states today to begin my little tour of the United States. I should be back in PR in late June. Of course all plans are subject to change in a flash or at my latest whim.

The other day Kelly and Shawna made the journey to Salinas from the west coast and stayed aboard Christa for the evening. The next day we stepped out on the Kayak for a tour around the surrounding mangroves. The place is really cool. Salinas has tons of manatees which are really interesting creatures. Genetically they are closest to elephant family which I thought kind of strange as they are known as sea cows.

But a good time was had by all. "Big Blue" which is the name for my kayak has been with me since 1998. I've paddled her in the Pacific, Atlantic and the Caribbean Sea. The Channel Islands of California and the Sacramento River, San Francisco Bay and Drakes Bay. During my dreadful crossing from the Turks and Caicos to Dominican Republic she was ripped off the davit by a large wave and was hanging on by just one small line. I almost cut her loose as I didn't think I'd be able to heave her back aboard in 10 footers. But I did and I am glad as big blue is certainly part of team Christa.

More Mangrove Action

Here is a great shot of what the mangrove creeks look like that are just adjacent to the natural harbor of Salinas. This is what I would be looking for to tuck Christa into and lash off to during a revolving storm. Of course no storms shall strike this year!
