New York Public Library

Capt Chris, wx is dreary and chilly
I love libraries and photograph them everywhere I go. Today Kristi and I went skulking about the City and one of our stops was the New York Public Library. The NY Public Library is one of the most significant research libraries in the world. Second only to the Library of Congress and the top Ivy League libraries. In the late 1800's John Jacob Astor and James Lenox, two rather wealthy fellows coughed up some dough to establish two libraries in the city. Toward the end of the century both libraries started to became cash strapped. In stepped several wealthy do gooders to get things squared away. Pretty soon the libraries were consolidated and Andrew Carnegie stepped in in 1901 with 5.2 million. This funded 39 branch libraries through out Manhatten. Pretty sweet. Privately funded project. Imagine that.
Tomorrow I am off on a train north to the Berkshires!
