COME WITH ME ABOARD S/V CHRISTA FOR A RIDE AROUND THE BLUE PLANET STARTING SEPTEMBER 2007
Today's Hike
Capt Chris, low sixites and cloudy
05/23/2008, Williamstown Mass, Berkshires

I've traded in the urban jungle of New York City for the calm of a sprawling meadow. Yesterday afternoon I made my way to New York's Penn Station and took the Amtac to Albany. The tracks are on the edge of the Henry Hudson river and it was a beautiful setting.

I'm up here in the north country visiting my friends John, Amy and Mike for a couple of weeks. This picture was taken this morning on Mike and Amy's property which is about as glorious as it gets. What you don't see are the two 90 pound labs, Gus and Brick that came along for the jaunt. Gotta jam!

Big different from New York. I could imagine a small cottage with several sheeps. Got your message the other day. Hope your doing well and having fun with your friends. Take care my dear friend.
New York Public Library
Capt Chris, wx is dreary and chilly

I love libraries and photograph them everywhere I go. Today Kristi and I went skulking about the City and one of our stops was the New York Public Library. The NY Public Library is one of the most significant research libraries in the world. Second only to the Library of Congress and the top Ivy League libraries. In the late 1800's John Jacob Astor and James Lenox, two rather wealthy fellows coughed up some dough to establish two libraries in the city. Toward the end of the century both libraries started to became cash strapped. In stepped several wealthy do gooders to get things squared away. Pretty soon the libraries were consolidated and Andrew Carnegie stepped in in 1901 with 5.2 million. This funded 39 branch libraries through out Manhatten. Pretty sweet. Privately funded project. Imagine that.

Tomorrow I am off on a train north to the Berkshires!

Wow....they taught you Coasties how to read. Do they have any books with pictures for us Army types? LOL Brother I am on your footsteps. I leave Iraq in two weeks, retire within 9 months. Save some of the fun times out there for me.

Hey Chuck....thanks for checking in and congrats on your upcoming retirement. Thanks for doing the heavy lifting that allows a guy like me to roam. Fair winds....

I'm now visiting my brother, sister in law and niece Annie in NYC after spending a few days visiting my sister and other niece Alexa in Connecticut.

I am truly grateful and am really enjoying my freedom to stop the boat for a period and do some traveling around. I had a quick reminder of why I bow at the alter of the tropical latitudes. My dad and I drove his snazzy red 2008 Corvette from Florida to my sisters in Connecticut. After 20 hours of driving, including a night spent in western Virginia, we emerged into......POW! Cold weather. Dreadful for a beachcomber. But here is the thing. The following day dawned clear and beautiful and Alexa and I went for a hike on the Turkey Trot Trail. My point is that I do miss the flaura and fauna of the higher latitudes, especially at the changing of the seasons.

Now the Strand Bookstore has been on my personal radar for a few years now. It is located on 12th and Broadway right in The Village. I spend hours in the store as it boasts 18 miles of books. It is crazy big and different from a Borders in many regards. But check this. A few months back disaster struck my Bro's apartment resulting in a flood. So the family had to relocate while the apartment is being renovated. Much to my delight they relocated to an 8th and Broadway apartment building. I sat on the toilet this morning staring straight at the Art Floor of the Bookstore. I was pleased.

I really love NYC and would one day like to spend a year living in the city. However it is a very very expensive prospect. But for now I'll just free load on the blow up mattress. Such is my fate.

Looking down the trackline. I plan on hooking up with my friend Kristi who lives in the city and is striving to improve her life. And of course hanging with the family, walking all over the city and maybe a jog in Central Park. More later.

I thought I would hate my first trip to NYC on bizness. It turned out that I really, really liked it. If you get a chance see the Museum of Art and Museum of Natural History. You will never forget them.

Jani Me and My Five Head
Capt Chris, sunny and hot
05/08/2008, Clermont Florida

Two worlds collided yesterday here in central Florida. I met the lovely Jani in Luperon Dominican Republic some months back while she was crewing aboard SV Another Adventure. She cruised aboard Another Adventure taking pretty much the same route I did aboard Christa. She recently came back to Florida after jumping ship in Puerto Rico. She's been bitten mightly by the sailing bug. It happens!

So it was tons of fun to meet up with Jani halfway between my folks place near Ocala and Jani's base of operations in Clearwater. We had a great day, dining at the Tiki Bar and checking out the sights in Clermont. It's funny how things unfurl. The last time I saw Jani was on the dreaded day we all, the whole gaggle of boats who were waiting for weather in Luperon, launched out into difficult weather. Many of us became separated, some of us were sea sick, just about all of us had gear break, some of us lost anchors.....but we all made it safely to Puerto Rico. So that is what I mean by how things unfurl. Just by happenstance Jani and I are in the same neighborhood. When you see a fellow cruiser enter port you tend to get excited and in this case, doesn't matter that we were on terra firma. Actually we were on a lake.

In other happening, I've been hanging at my Mom and Dad's for about a week now. Just enjoying myself, running, hanging out at the pool and generally not doing much. But tomorrow Dad and I will make the drive up to Conn as my Mom was on the advance team via aircraft. All is well in my world! Thanks for reading.

Damn, we left Sanibel yesterday and drove 14 hours to NC. I wish we had known you were in FL. We would have made a special stop to meet you. We were at my dad's house for a week. He is in stage 4 of PSP, and needed some assistance. We have been in FL for the past week. Maybe next time. It sounds like you are having a great time Chris. She looks like a great 1st mate to me.
