So how are things working out with the new dog?
Matey has liked every person he's met, even the toddler who pulled his hair.
Matey seldom barks, even when dogs behind fences are barking at him.
Matey follows me from room to room, but never makes a fuss when I have to leave him behind.
Matey will chase anything that moves (birds, squirrels, bunnies, an armadillo and a deer) but has been non-aggressive to every dog and cat he's met (he's never gotten close enough to the wild animals to see what he would do).
Matey now always comes when he's called, so when we walk in the woods away from streets I let him off the leash. He sniffs around at things and lingers behind me just so he can come running up to me, bounding through the brush if he's off the path.
I've taken Matey to Adler's school for show and tell (a classroom full of kindergartners didn't faze him). He's gone shopping at the stores that let dogs in. I took him on a narrow gauge train ride with Bud and Adler. He sat at my feet in the depot while people walked all around. He sat quietly in my lap for the ride (no room on the floor) and didn't make a sound even during the small fireworks display.
Because of Matey I get out and walk at least twice a day.
Because of Matey I've met neighbors and Adler has a couple of new friends.
Because of Matey I've walked on trails I wouldn't have done alone, and walked farther than I would have gone alone.
Because of Matey I smile more.
I'd say things with the new dog are working out pretty well.
