Tomorrow in Tonga

We made a two night trip to the northernmost islands of Tonga and are at anchor. As we sailed in peaceful winds and seas for most of the trip, with a drenching, blowy rain only the last night (which cut out the visibility of our destination until just moments before arrival), we realized that we feel most at home at sea now. Each country brings the delighting challenges of new culture, making our ears and eyes and brains work hard. Yet getting back on the water brings a sigh and the familiarity of a culture and role that we know. The Pacific tectonic plate slides under the Indo-Australian plate at the Tongan trench, so the charts note "volcanic activity" and we are looking across the reef to the cone-shaped peak of Tafahi, a mere 3.4 sq km.
