Green Flash

20 April 2014 | Rodney Bay, St Lucia
Margi & Gary
I'm sure most everyone has heard of the fabled "Green Flash" that is supposed to occur just as the sun slips under the horizon.

I (Margi) have been watching sunsets for years hoping for the Green Flash. Finally about two months ago we were making a long crossing and I was sleeping. Gary woke me up to watch the sunset. I finally saw the Green Flash. I have been with other people who have seen it and I must have blinked and missed it.

We are in Rodney Bay, St. Lucia. One afternoon we went over to Shadowfax, Heather and Keith’s boat for an oldcruising tradition known as Sundowners. As the sun was going down Keith handed me some binoculars. He said to look right before it dips below the horizon. There was a green halo around the sun. It was a very vivid lime green. Since then, here in Rodney Bay, I have seen the green halo around the sun six times. As the sun disappears below the horizon there is a Green Flash.

Fortunately Gary has finally seen it too. The last couple times we saw the flash it was a turquoise green.

Of course, the horizon needs to be clear of clouds and you need to have an unobstructed view of the sea to the horizon to even have a chance of seeing this phenomena. Luckily, Rodney Bay is situated to give a clear view if the sea horizon. I (Gary) will try to use our Go Pro (video camera) with the binoculars to catch this amazing event to share with all our fiends.
