Another beautiful day in Cascais

Hi Mom, I worked hard all day on the boat and took a small break to paddle to the praia. These poor girls were on a boat with a couple of guys and a few more of their girls friends. I could see they were running out of things to do and, since they had cerveja, I let them use my stand up paddle board for a while. The captain, Miguel, sent me this photo, so I could show how nice I am to help them enjoy their day. Just another example of the nice people you can meet on boats.

In Cascais, Portugal - since Sept 22!

Hi Mom, Kathryn sent out a safe arrival message but you are correct in that I have not put a new blog entry in. I typed several during the 6 days at sea but could not ever get a HF radio connection to transmit them.

Hi Mom, FInally got a radio contact and so this is mainly a test. We did have a discussion with the immigration guy here at the marina. There is some more latitude than we thought but we are still looking. Have not had much from Lauren lately. Some conversation with Phoebe.

Leaving the Azores tomorrow - hopefully

Hi Mom, after 3 months in the Azores we will attempt to sail to Lisboa tomorrow. Should take about a week. Boat is topped off with fuel as we anticipate lighter conditions until about 200 miles off the Portuguese coast. Will try to update with the radio if I can remember how. Love Tommy

Kat Venator

We are motoring today in 9kts. It is a relief not to have raucous and confused seas, high winds, and rain we have gone through since leaving Bermuda. These conditions often seemed to last 24-36 hours. It got wearing! Rappelling around the 'house' as the sea, Katface, and hence us too, lurched and staggered, Trying to get some food on a 36 hour, extreme starboard tack (imagine your fridge hanging on the ceiling and you are starving and want to get some food out!) , Piles of sodden clothing and foul weather gear, crusted in salt and refusing to dry!

As far as my view of passage making, in light of all the joyous accounts Ive read/heard of the experience ("the stars! the serenity! the dolphins! the delightful breakfast treats Suzy whipped up for us every morning!") I must say that The Emperor has no clothes. It has been pretty grueling. .

We routed off a direct path to The Azores in order to avoid REALLY difficult conditions forecast by our weather guy. .The 300 nm we added by doing that means we will complete the passage at the higher end of the duration range - 340 more miles to Horta (island in the Azores) which puts us there in 2 days.../except Tom doesnt want to enter the harbor in the evening so we will possibly decide to slow down and check in there Wed.. Katface has been a champ, along with her main helmsman, Otto. We have spent a lot of time doing over 8kts speed over ground. Zoom!

The engine wouldn't start today when we wanted to begin motoring - wires had come lose in the fuel pump, it seems. Tom patche dit up with chewing gum - I swear! Is he on his way to becoming a true Kiwi?!

I have read more books in short term, than since I was PhD student.
