Lagos

Hi Mom, The boat is actually floating, in water, in a marina in Lagos. We made it in to the marina within a few minutes of our predicted time on the high tide on Wednesday afternoon. We motored the whole way so the sails have yet to be unloaded. Had a few adventures. The first leaving Lisbon. There was [...]

Another beautiful day in Cascais

Hi Mom, I worked hard all day on the boat and took a small break to paddle to the praia. These poor girls were on a boat with a couple of guys and a few more of their girls friends. I could see they were running out of things to do and, since they had cerveja, I let them use my stand up paddle board for a while. The captain, Miguel, sent me this photo, so I could show how nice I am to help them enjoy their day. Just another example of the nice people you can meet on boats.

Mosquito Coast

Hi Mom,

In Cascais, Portugal - since Sept 22!

Hi Mom, Kathryn sent out a safe arrival message but you are correct in that I have not put a new blog entry in. I typed several during the 6 days at sea but could not ever get a HF radio connection to transmit them.

HF radio version

Hi Mom, FInally got a radio contact and so this is mainly a test. We did have a discussion with the immigration guy here at the marina. There is some more latitude than we thought but we are still looking. Have not had much from Lauren lately. Some conversation with Phoebe.

Leaving the Azores tomorrow - hopefully

Hi Mom, after 3 months in the Azores we will attempt to sail to Lisboa tomorrow. Should take about a week. Boat is topped off with fuel as we anticipate lighter conditions until about 200 miles off the Portuguese coast. Will try to update with the radio if I can remember how. Love Tommy

Living the Horta life

Our 6th day here; and not yet feeling that 'time-to-go feeling' that we got to in Bermuda.
We are enjoying the weather, people, and low cost of living. Have a great location now for Katface in a marina slip. $18Euros a day - so cheap!

Yesterday was surely one to celebrate, because Tom was at last able to procure & install a replacement fuel pump for the one that he repaired with a piece of chewing gum! Will put photo in album* with red arrow pointing to the gum, so do look at that thang ... and WONDER at the fact that we were 500 miles from land on open ocean when he jerry-rigged it... and, omg it LASTED through so many miles and a number of engine starts. I admit it was scary.

(*We are meant to be able to add a photo to each post, and I keep trying but it doesnt always seem to work. Seem to only be able to make albums.)

We are close to having all the boat issues that emerged since we left the Cheseapeake, resolved. Replacing the failed water-maker will have to wait til mainland Europe though. FYI, we still had a portion of one of the four hull-tanks of water left when we arrived here, plus a few large storage jugs. (Of course, I washed my hair only once during the first 14 days!! errr.)

We've had some nice gams with fellow sailors here in Horta. Enjoying being in the minority as a US flagged boat, as most are from Europe, especially France. In the new photo, there is Aay from Indonesia, Walter from Germany, Stephen of Australia but now from Sweden, and Mark from Oz. All sailed here from the Carib; and many many more miles before that. True cruisers!

The days are wonderfully long here, sunrise to sunset 6:30am to 9:30pm. We expect to remain here perhaps another week...? Would like to see some of the other 8 islands in the chain. The nearest one, Pico, we will visit by taking the ferry from here. (You can see the top of Pico above the low clouds, in some of the photos). Then, on to Portugal - about 1100 miles, so a mere 5-6 days' sail. Will post again when plans are known.
