Koinonia Sailing and RVing

We arrived at the dock of the boat yard at Nanny Cay marina, where we tied up for the night, in preparation for the haul out the following morning. Some of the little things that we have come to really appreciate during infrequent marina stays, are taking long hot showers and being able to do laundry. We were able to do both during our stay at the boat yard/marina.

The showers at this modest marina were the nicest I have seen at any marina. Instead of a typical men's and women's restroom and shower set up, the facility had several individual nicely appointed bathroom suites. It was wonderful to finally take a real shower, instead of a boat shower, where you conserve every drop of water, by turning the water off and on, only as you need it.

We got up early to use the self service laundry facilities. During our travels, it has been difficult to find self service laundry, so I really appreciate the opportunity to do laundry when facilities are available. One of the ladies in the laundry room was complaining about having to doing laundry. I was just happy to get to do laundry! It was so rewarding to return to the boat with quantities of fresh laundry. Trust me, I am not as enthusiastic about laundry when I am at home. It's all about the perspective.

The boat yard crew was prompt with the haul out. The crane lift was moved into position on the haul out dock, slings placed under Koinonia's hull and she was hauled out of the water. Suspended in the lift, the crane took her spot in the yard, where she spent the next two days getting some much needed TLC. Despite the intermittent rain, the bottom of the hull was sanded the same day. The following day, the rains abated in time for the bottom to be painted, the hull polished to a nice shine, and the bent anchor housing straightened. We decided to save money and polish the topside ourselves, instead of having the yard to the job.

We had fun shopping at the marine store, where we found some needed supplies and some new fantastic boat care products. I have been a polishing fool since I discovered Collinite No. 920 Fiberglass Boat Cleaner and Collinite No. 850 Metal Wax. The boat cleaner removes various stains and oxidation, restores the original color and leaves a nice shine. The metal wax removes rust and oxidation and leaves a protective shine on a variety of metals. I am hooked on these products! It was nice to have the boat looking good once again.

Our time in the boat yard was a good experience. It was the first time Don had slept ashore (still on the boat though) since we put the boat in the water in Croatia April of last year. Before leaving Nanny Cay, we stopped by to visit with some fellow Hunter 41 DS (boat like ours), owners whom we previously met in the anchorage in Virgin Gorda. It was fun touring their boat and chatting about there differences and similarities between our respective boats.
