This was Our first real RV travel experience as we headed to South Florida and the Everglades! It has been awhile since we returned from cruising aboard Koinonia II and since then, much has taken place in our lives. Linda and I are now planning to spend some time traveling around the US and Canada in our RV motorhome "Koinonia III".

Linda returns to crew in Bahamas

With Koinonia anchored off of Stocking island, one mile from the dinghy dock in Victoria Lake, Geoegetown, and the wind blowing 15 to 20 knots, I headed to the airport to meet Linda upon her arrival back to Koinonia after a month of shore leave!

St. Martin to Virgin Gorda B.V.I.

27 February 2013 | Virgin Gorda BVI
Linda

We left the anchorage in St. Martin on schedule at 4:00 P.M, for the fifteen hour overnight passage. This departure time gave us enough daylight to navigate around potential crab pots outside of St. Martin, and arrive in the B.V.I.s just after sunrise, which is beneficial for navigating the shallow waters. The winds were light and the seas were fair, just the way I like it.

After sitting the St. Martin anchorage for four days, we had consumed the water supply in one tank and the other tank was half full. The water in the anchorage had become too churned up and silty during the swells, so we could not use the water maker until we got underway for the passage. Once we were underway, we turned on the water maker and made great progress towards filling the tank. Within an hour and a half, I went down below to hear water spraying, and the water pump humming, which a sign that there was a water leak and water was being dispensed from our storage tank. Don discovered the connection to the hot water heater had expanded, creating a leak. Water from the tank that was being filled, was simultaneously being emptied. So we had no water in either of our tanks. We turned off the water pump, which temporarily stopped the leak, until Don rigged a repair. Water making and storage were successfully resumed.

The light of the full moon was mostly obscured by clouds throughout the evening. However, we did have the benefit of some of it's light. At one point, we saw what looked like a whale spouting water at the surface. There were several times that we were visited by something swimming below the boat. When the chart showed depths of greater than three thousand feet, the depth gauge on the boat went from indicating the water was too deep to register a depth, to depths from 10 - 20 feet, and back out of range again. I was just glad there we never felt anything bump the boat.

There was some light rain just before sunrise, which was great for rinsing down the boat before our arrival. The sunrise at sea was not as spectacular as it could have been, due to the cloud cover. It was a welcomed site to make landfall and settle in the the anchorage, after a nice overnight passage.

After Don went through the exercise of checking into customs, we enjoyed a lazy afternoon on the boat and later a swim off of the boat, where we saw a stingray near our anchor. We took a dinghy ride to explore the other end of the bay, which is the site of the Bitter End Yacht club. We had a late afternoon snack at a restaurant and enjoyed the beautiful island views. The following afternoon, we snorkeled on some of the reefs, met another Hunter 41DS (same model as our boat) and enjoyed dinner on the boat.

I look forward to island hopping in the Virgin Islands. Unlike the Windward and Leeward islands, the Virgins are all fairly close together, so our days will not be spent just getting to the next island.
