Headed out of the Colon breakwater of the canal zone this morning in some sloppy, heavy sea conditions with about 16-18 kts on the nose with the main up. Just before letting out the jib, we had to abort and return to the marina as we blew the port transmission. Unfortunately, we will be "stuck" here for a few weeks while we have new transmissions flown in. Worse yet, they will not be "plug and play" as we have to move the engines forward 1" (doesn't really sound like much, does it?) in order to accomodate the new, correctly sized transmissions. It's a huge job and we were hoping it wouldn't happen, but here we are!
