Bahia del Sol03/25/2012
To get into this peaceful river estuary, we surfed down several breaking waves while following a bar pilot on a jet ski. The El Salvador Cruiser's Rally is showing us a good time here while we put the boat away and return home. Neat place.
Our buddy boat Risk Taker shot this, underway from Puerto Chiapas to Bahia del Sol, El Salvador. Just seconds after this picture, the fishing rod went double, and we had to douse in a hurry. Our new fishing secret - just put up the spinnaker!
Liberte has not made it to Cuba yet... but we did survive a punishing drive in to San Pedro to earn this tranquil spot.
Lake Atitlan, Guatemala03/25/2012
We spent a couple blissful days in San Pedro, a town surrounded by volcanoes.
From Puerto Chiapas, we took 6 days and went inland to the mountains of Guatemala. What a place! Bill Bell, who used to live there as a Peace Corp volunteer, gave us a local's tour. We drove our rental car up over 10,000-foot mountain passes, into native Mayan villages in mountain valleys, and to a gorgeous volcanic lake. There is something very special about the people and places of Guatemala. And even 5'3" Rebecca felt very tall here!
Arrival in Puerto Chiapas03/03/2012
Liberte has arrived in Puerto Chiapas, the southernmost port in Mexico. It's a real sense of accomplishment and excitement to be here. We are some of the first customers for a brand new marina. Enrique the dockmaster has been fantastic. We were welcomed by fellow El Salvador Rally cruisers, along with these very sharp and professional gentlemen who inspected our boat on arrival, complete with a dog. We were expecting them, and had a cold Coca Cola on ice waiting for each man. The dog is not allowed to have treats - but we tried. We are here for some inland sightseeing for a week or so, then off to El Salvador we plan to go.
