Communications out of the states are not panning out like we had planned. I had naively thought that we would be able to access free wifi servers with the wifi booster antenna we have and the magic jack voice over IP phone thing would allow us to keep in touch via phone.

Well.... so far there are no free wifi hotspots and we have learned that the magic jack is magic junk. Sometimes it works.... but most of the time one party or the other hears nothing but stuttering blabber. Basically, its junk and a waste of effort. The worst part about that is the without the magic jack I cannot use the super cool Pirates of the Caribbean phone I bought.

We have downloaded Skpe and will be getting that setup on both the computer and on my iPhone. That should help when we can find wifi. Right now I am using a $7 per day wifi service that is good but it is unclear how much similar wifi we will find down island in the Exumas.

One surprise was when my iPhone rang yesterday. Not a good surprise really since the call was about yet more investment property disasters but people calling my cell phone were reaching me here via the Bahamian cellular service Batelco. The best part about this is the charges are going to be something like $10 per minute.... Yipeeeeee

Because of the communications issues and some apparently deep seated worries about our general safety in certain interested parties (that means you Carolyn and Linda....) I went out and splurged on a Spot. This is a GPS transmitting device that lets people log into the internet and track our progress and location. To the right of this page in the links area is a link labelled "Spot". Click that and you will be taken to a webpage that shows our last or current location. We will not be leaving this thing on all the time as it runs on batteries but we will turn it on whenever we move locations. Anyone who is interested can track us in real time (it updates every 10 minutes) as we sail around and tell from the last reported position where we are anchored.

After another day dealing with hassles we hope to be back on the move tomorrow.

“To be truly challenging, a voyage, like a life, must rest on a firm foundation of financial unrest. Otherwise you are doomed to a routine traverse, the kind known to yachtsmen, who play with their boats at sea - "cruising," it is called. Voyaging belongs to seamen, and to the wanderers of the world who cannot, or will not, fit in. If you are contemplating a voyage and you have the means, abandon the venture until your fortunes change. Only then will you know what the sea is all about.” - Sterling Hayden
