First Wednesday Night Race of the season -- for us. Those trickster Hudson River winds fooled the Race Committee with 12 knots NW before the start -- so they set the long course. Got a mediocre start in the B Division -- which means one of our best starts ever -- on time but downwind of the fleet. Second to last around the windward mark, but passed almost the entire fleet on the second 2 mile leg by crabbing the tide better. Then, at Government Mark 10, the wind petered out to a 2 knot northerly, and the entire fleet sat there racing the buoy against the flooding tide. Briefly, we pulled into the lead by crabbing out of the channel, But as the westerly filled in again, the more westerly (and lighter) boats started moving first, so we finished 5 out of 10 boats on uncorrected time, and we will be clobbered on corrected time.
Afterwards, at the usual gabfest over a late dinner on the patio, the caretaker announced the reason the police were here was that a bear was on the property. I asked if they were sure it wasn't just one of our famous Nyack Boat Club woodchucks, but the launch operator confirmed he had seen it. The bear was in among the Laser racks, and headed for the Optis. A police officer then announced that the bear on the property was 8 FEET TALL (NOT!) and that it was frightened and would certainly maul someone if it came up to patio so we should all go inside.
We were getting ready to leave anyway . . . we weren't going to be allowed to go look at the bear, and we didn't want to be around if the local police got some marksmanship practice by killing it, so we went home.
The next morning's paper just reported that a bear was seen roaming around Upper Nyack, but did not report on the bruin's fate.
