(257) Mazatlan to Bahia Los Muertos

23 November 2017 | Bahia Los Muertos
HB
Distance: 200 + nautical miles, 2 days and 2 nights. Big hugs and a goodbye to Lolli and Gigi, the two lovely ladies in the marina office who we relied on for all kinds of information over the 5 months in Mazatlan. Our good friend Will, who looked after Pipi on our excursions from the boat and who was Ian's go to buddy for all boat things, and Warner, our neighbor on the slip next to us helped us push off around 9:00am. We exited the narrow channel into light swells and turned north NNW to parallel the mainland coast about 5 miles off. The forecast was for light winds from the northwest on the first day, then topping off around 20 knots, same direction, as we closed in on Bahia Los Muertos on the Peninsula side. Passed many large fishing boats during the first night. By early next morning after some good motorsailing we reached about 100 nm and then turned 90 degrees and motored with very little wind, directly toward Bahia Los Muertos. Through most of the second day there was little wind and we saw many turtles, dozing seals and a couple of groups of dolphins. Later in the day on cue the winds began picking up and by sunset we were on a beam reach with 20-25 knots. And it pretty much remained that way through the night, with a half waning moon from about 2 am until sunrise to give us a good amount of light. Dropped the anchor in 25 ft of beautiful clear water in Bahia Los Muertos an hour after sunrise, both of us and Pipi (who helped keep watch in the cockpit through both nights) had a restful nap, and then we dinghied ashore for an omelet breakfast and fresh orange juice.

Photo is of sunrise from the cockpit a couple of hours out from Bahia Los Muertos.
