Rig inspection

20 April 2010 | Lymington, UK
Author: Hamish
I meet Jerry the Rigger today to have a proper rig inspection done and learn what to look out for when we are on the high seas. It was really useful and has turned out to be slightly expensive. It is something that I probably should have got done before we bought it, and it was supposed to get done by the surveyor, but he ran out of time and convinced me that the rig would be fine, so we didn't do it. Hindsight is wonderful. The verdict by Jerry was that the rig was in pretty good condition but two problems were found. The starboard lower stay has a broken wire strand at the top and the genoa furling head has jammed onto the extrusion and damaged it, hence why we can't get the genoa down. I really should have pushed for the survey and recommend that anyone buying a boat gets the rig surveyed. Hopefully both of these items can be fixed without the mast having to come out
