Rob & Jeanie live about an hour west along the coast in a beautiful house they designed and had built 2 years ago (adobe-ish with lots of outside hammocks, veggie & flower gardens, an endless pool and a couple of rooms to do art and a library/office). They are surfers so that is the big attraction to El Salvador for them. They can drive a short distance to be at one of the best surfing spots and they can see it from their house. I was sick with dysentery (from the hotel food - 103oF fever!) and Scott dealing with his rash when we went to visit them but had a good time nonetheless. It was helpful to be convalescing in a comfy bed in an air-conditioned room too. We didn't do much except swim, watch movies, eat and took a day trip into San Salvador: Rob & Jeanie showed us to all kinds of neat stores (grocery, hardware, French bakery, etc) and I 'got' to watch those guys eat yummy spicy Korean food after we took a tour of the botanical gardens. The gardens had a small 'forest' of bamboo - the diameter of the bamboo was like 12 inches! And they had all kinds of flowering plants that had amazing 'flowers' - think Birds of Paradise gone crazy, some coffee plants, all kinds of big lush green leafy plants (banana) and neat water gardens with Lotus' flowers, fish and turtles. Mango, Cashew & Banana trees are plentiful here as well as others with huge termite nests (ah!). Colorful small crabs run across the main coastal road like squirrels do in the states. Rob says this only happens after the first big rain.
