Back in Banderas Bay
20 February 2015 | Yelapa, Mexico
Early yesterday morning we arrived in Yelapa on the South shore of Banderas Bay after a short overnight trip from Tenacatita.
We waited for a good weather window with Southerly winds before leaving and actually got what we wanted for part of the trip. Heading out of Tenacatita we had a nice beam reach in 14 knots of wind for the first few miles. It was nice to be on our best point of sail and scooting along at 8.5 knots. Then, we turned the corner out of the bay, put up the A-sail and headed North. We were able to sail for the next few hours, but then as the wind died, we began motor sailing.
Cabo Corrientes, the South side of Banderas Bay, juts well out and really funnels the wind and currents. But, because of the South wind we had nearly flat seas for our entrance to the bay. A real treat!
We spend the night on a mooring in rolly Yelapa after a great hike, 3-4 miles up into the hills, to a great waterfall and swimming hole. I wish I had a picture for you, but until I get a new laptop I can't get my photos off of my camera! You'll just have to believe me that it was a pretty incredible jungle swimming hole with a sandy bottom, vine covered cliffs all around, and a pounding waterfall.
Today we are off to Punta de Mita!
