One heck of a thunderstorm - with more to come
11 December 2015 | La Cruz, Banderas Bay
Mark
We just finished riding out a couple of exciting thunderstorms here in the LaCruz Anchorage. Earlier this afternoon, I could see the dark clouds across Banderas Bay. Then, the squalls showed up on radar, making it clear that they were moving our way. The storm wasn't supposed to arrive until late tonight, but it showed up this afternoon instead, postponing a great party that was planned at the marina.
First, we could hear the thunder in the distance and then the wind started. It was gentle at first, but quickly built to 30 knots, peaking at around 35 knots. Anchored boats were pitching in the steep waves and we watched one ketch drag through the anchorage at near sailing speed! Luckily they were on board and were able to get things under control before they hit the beach.
As the wind dropped, the rain increased to a tropical downpour - giving Speakeasy a nice wash! It's all quiet now with gentle rain and about 12 knots of wind. Speakeasy is happy and didn't drag an inch. I did deploy our lightning gear with the heavy cable overboard as the forecast is that we will see several more strong thunderstorm cells overnight. We have been warned that winds could be back in the upper 30's. Exciting times!
