Out Sailing on the Blue Sea!

21 June 2012 | Gulf of Alaska
JoLe & KC Wilson
We pulled anchor this morning and left Port Walter around 8:45. Decided we'd go into Port Alexander, at the SE tip of Baranof Island, to see what it was like. It was really cute, but had a tiny, tiny harbor, we were in 14 feet of water at one point. Saw numerous whales feeding along the shoreline on our way there.

We pulled out of Port Alexander went a couple miles more and we were out in the Gulf of Alaska by around 10:45 a.m.! Didn't have much wind, but what we had was from behind us, from the North, so we initially put up just the jib. After about a half hour of this KC couldn't stand it, he just had to put up the light air sail, which we did, with no mishaps! This brought our speed up from 4 kts. to anywhere between 5 - 6.8 kts. depending on the wind, so far we've averaged 5.3 kph. We've been sailing with the light air sail ever since; it's currently 6:35p.m. Alaska Time! It's great, although we are having to reacquaint ourselves with being harnessed onto the jack lines, the sound of the wheel and autopilot when in our berth, and the squeek of the sheets!

Both of us tried to nap this afternoon, but weren't really able to, happy to be out at sea in the SUNSHINE and BLUE SKY! It's currently 63 degrees outside. Cooking! Figure if the winds continue on this way today we will leave the light air sail up until just before dark, then take it down as it takes two of us to take it down and put it up, set the jib and KC will go to sleep for 3 - 4 hours, then switch. At least that's the plan! The only worry is for a while there we saw lots of logs and birds surfing on logs, hopefully we are now out far enough from shore (25 miles) to not have to contend with them, especially when you can't see anything at night.
