The usual Fiji thing

25 June 2014 | Musket Cove, Malolo Lai Lai, Fiji
Since it's been about a month since we lasted posted, we thought it was about time we sat down, put some thought into a post, and actually do it. So, what have we been up to in the last month?

We have been in and out of Port Denarau twice, which gives us a chance to stock up on food and we find that we spoil ourselves with yummy touristy food by eating out just about every night at one of the great restaurants. It's also nice to be in Denarau as a change of scenery from Musket Cove and allows us to take care of any needed Tanga business.

When we are at Musket Cove and not surfing, we have been playing our afternoon Farkle and Bocce Ball tournaments, playing tennis, and fishing (we have caught 2 wahoo and 1 big eye tuna).

Nice sized Waloo that we caught and shared with friends from two other boats.

When the surf is up and the weather cooperates, we are anchored at Namotu Island. Tom gets his surf on and I snorkel around.

About a week ago, we had perfect conditions for 3 days of fun in the sun! With John and Leanne back in Fiji on a new boat, (the Red Menance was nuked by a lightning strike this past December), we all decided to get out of Musket Cove, and anchor in different areas around here. During the day, we were anchored at Namotu Island, so Tom and John could surf, and then in the afternoon, we would move the boats to a protected area for the night.

Day one, we anchored by Cloud 9, which is the floating bar located inside a few reefs with beautiful clear water. The anchorage is fairly protected from the swell, but it can still be a bit rolly. There are a few small coral patches here and there, but it is easy enough to find a place to drop anchor in 20 feet of crystal clear water. Tanga was a little rolly that night but we slept fairly well.

Flinstone steaks...ribeye on the bone. They are huge and oh so delicious!

On the second night, we headed to the main island, on the southwestern corner, and anchored in Momi Bay. The bottom is mud, so the holding is great and we anchored in about 17 feet of calm water. We slept like babies this night.

In the afternoon of day 3, the winds picked back up so we headed back to our home base at Musket Cove, where we caught up on chores for the next few days.

We are currently back over to Port Denarau, to provision, pick up a boat part that we ordered about a month ago, watch the horse races and get ready to head to the north. Yeah, we are getting out of Musket Cove for a while and heading to the northern island of Vanua Levu. We have to take Tanga out of the country this year; her 18 month visa expires soon, so it's time for us to start the visa run trip. We will explain our trip north in more detail in a future post.

Update: We left Musket Cove on Thursday (we had a mooring reservation at Denarau starting on Friday) and headed to a tiny deserted island nicknamed Honeymoon Beach. The snorkeling was geat, the beach is very pretty however, the anchorage is 100% exposed to both wind and swells, so this is just a place to go for a few hours.

We then motored over to another island, nicknamed Castaway Island, (named after the movie). We had a very relaxing and enjoyable afternoon, eating pizza and drinkiing champagne. There are two different areas where we could anchor, depending on the wind direction. The anchorage we were in was deep, about 70 feet, flat calm and very peaceful.

Today is the horseraces...a first for Fiji...this is going to be a hoot!
