Beat Back to San Felipe
Capt Rich
09/14/2009, 30 miles and back where started

The short of it is that we were beaten back to San Felipe by the Sea last night and are currently licking our wounds as we wait for the weather to lighten up so we can try again. We left at 11PM and by 2AM decided to call it quits after 15 miles of riding inside a washing machine. Lori lost here dinner over board and wasn't able to stand watch so there was no point in beating ourselves up any longer. For a moment, I felt like Captain Dan from the Forest Gump movie, screaming at the sea as it pounded THIRD DAY; however rather than challenging it, taunting it, I was pleading with the sea to calm down and let us pass. My pleas fell on death ears, so while Lori was bouncing between the leeboard and bulkhead of the starboards setae like a pin ball, I spun the boat around and made our best speed back to the protection of the San Felipe breakwater.

It is a bit deflating to have traveled 30 miles in 7hrs and find oneself back where we started, however sometimes the best way to get to where you are going on a boat is to stop trying so dang hard! The crew was never in any danger last night, as THIRD DAY could take much worse conditions, we were just uncomfortable.

While You Were Sleeping
Capt Rich
09/13/2009, We pulled anchor and headed for Penasco

With the seas calming and the wind dying off, we decided that instead of going to bed, we will start our appromimately 14hr trip from San Felipe to Punta Penasco. We will post along the way over our ham radio and should arrive sometime around lunch. So while you were sleeping, we were motoring northeast across the northern Sea of Cortez and seeing the sunrise over our starboard bow!

Mexican Navy Assist Follow-up
Capt Rich
09/13/2009, did we get our battery back?

Back when we were at Isla San Luis we assisted a stranded navy Panga by loaning them our starting battery. I wrote about that incident in Pan Pan Pan: Mexican Navy Vessel Adrift. Yesterday I took a taxi to the Mexican navy base in search of my starting battery. When I started explaining the situation to the guard at the gate, he knew what I was talking about and quickly sent someone off to retrieve my battery and 2 minutes later a Navy officer arrived with my battery and a word of thanks. Technically, it wasn't my original battery, but it was a new battery of the same make and model that I purchased in Santa Rosilia. In a move I've found to be typical of Mexican officials, I did my best to speak all Spanish during our exchange and he worked with me all in Spanish, but as we were shaking hands, he turned on his perfect English and thanked me for helping out. His English was without a doubt far better than my Spanish, but I did get points for trying!
