First Sunset at Sea
29 October 2007 | 50 Miles out of San Diego
Capt Rich
We were the 3rd boat past the starting line at 1100Hrs this morning, but that didn't last long. Some of the 181 Boats that all headed South for Mexico today are rocket sleds! We were able to sail the first 30 or so miles ripping along at 7kts before the wind died and the motor came to keep making progress. We were able to fly our spinnaker for the first time and that was pretty cool, but the winds were even a bit too light for that by the time we got it flying. Dinner tonight was great, Costco lasagna, corn, and Rosemary Costco bread. We will have many a Costco meal on this trip. The fridge/freezer is working great, keeping frozen things frozen and cold things cold, which may not seem like a lot on land, but sometimes on a boat, that is a big deal and feat to pull off.
We have all been napping during the day, and will take 2 hr watches through the night. With a 4 man crew, that gives everyone plenty of rest.
As we were leaving San Diego, a Aircraft carrier left and it looked like a moving ISLAND it was so big, pretty cool to see up close.
This will be my first post from sea, so if it works (and I won't know until we reach Cabo to check from the web) all the time and $$ blown on this SSB Ham rig will be worth it.
