Strange weather and ordering the new sail

03 November 2016 | Prickly Bay, Grenada
Bill/ Cloudy and overcast
It was a strange weather today(Wednesday) here in Prickly Bay. Cloudy from sun up all through the day with the occasional round of thunder rolling out of the hill. Dark clouds, light clouds with some sun thrown in from time to time. Winds were out of the southeast and shifted through the day till they came out of the northeast. We were all over the place.

When the winds came from the southeast, they brought in swell making the anchorage quite rolly and uncomfortable. We were bouncing side to side and bow to stern. Not a pleasant day by any ones imagination. With all that being said, I had to go up the mast to take our last measurement for the new mainsail. I strapped on the bosuns chair and Tracy slowly pulled me up the mast with me climbing using the stairs I put in years ago. With all the rolling, I was dancing around like a tether ball on a rope in a kids playground. Not that pleasant a way to spend some time to day. I ended up wedging myself between the back stay and the mast. When thrown backwards, I had the backstay at my back and when forward, I had the mast all the time with stairs under each foot and a tape measure in my hands. We had several things to measure for the sail loft. Top of the mast to the boom, top of the mast to the deck and more. Once back on deck we had more measurement to do there. Length of boom. Length from the mast to the back stay and many more.

Once we had all the measuring done, I typed up an email with all the numbers and even added some pictures so they would better understand what I was writing about and emailed it to them back in Hong Kong. Now all we have to do is wait for the reply. Maybe tomorrow or Friday. We want all this over and set before we take off for farther north in the chain of islands toward St. Maarten. It's duty free and we are having the sail FedEx'd there. Got to be cheaper than here and we've seen enough of Grenada.

It's now Thursday and it's raining with a bunch of lightening and thunder. We've never heard thunder like this before where it just rolls over the bay almost non stop. One long rumble. Some louder and some quieter but it just goes on and on. It was cloudy when we got up this morning just as it was yesterday but the winds have been from the east so the swells today are nothing like yesterday. I did some dishwashing in the afternoon but the hot water in the tub ran cold so I stopped for a few minutes to let the dishes in the drainer dry a bit and sat down on the settee. We'd been rolling a good bit but we suddenly got hit by a big swell coming into the bay, throwing us suddenly so we were anything but level. I had the stove where the drainer was located on it's "swing" mode so it would shift in the swells but one of our tea kettles got jammed under the back edge not allowing it to swing so when the biggie hit us, the dishes went flying. It was a two part swell and I was climbing out from behind the table just after the first one as I could see the dishes we starting to slide. I just didn't get there fast enough and they all went crashing to the floor. We lost several of our dishes and one very nice serving dish that we have used for years and loved. What a mess of porcelain on the floor. We grabbed a white trash bag and slowly collected the bit and pieces trying to clean up our mess. We've never had it happen before in all the years we've been out.

Yesterday evening, we motored over to LeuCat for a great pizza dinner. Mary Margaret make a great pizza and we were invited to partake. Quite a treat for us as we rarely ever go out any more. It's been great seeing them again as we've followed their blog for years and finally got to meet them earlier when we were in Trinidad. They are putting LeuCat on the hard in about a week and heading back home till January. The Caribbean is a small place so I'm sure we will see them again up the islands.

The picture today is of one of our sailslides. These hold the forward edge of the mainsail to the mast. Far East Sailmakers didn't show them on their site so we sent them some picutres.

You put your trash out in trash cans by the curb. Here, they put it in raised steel containers to keep animals out of it while awaiting pickup.
OK, sounds like a restaurant I want to try. Nothing wrong with a skull on the sign.
