Finally Internet Post 3
28 December 2016 | Deep Bay, Antigua
It's now the second day at Deep Bay. As I wrote in the last post, we had nine boats in with us, several were charters so we knew that would be gone today. As expected, they were gone until we were down to just two boats. A locals sailboat and us. During the day we had tour boats come in and belch out lots of tourist that played in the water and sand. Luckily, none of them came with loud music.
I got the generator up and running about 0900 and by 1000, it looked like it was going to pour. I pulled out one of our tarps and put it over the generator just as it started to pour and boy did it ever. For well over an hour, Mother Nature gave forth a bunch of rain, cleaning our decks and everything else out side.
In the afternoon, we launched Puff and headed for shore wanting to see the beach and hike up the hill next to the anchorage(Fort Barrington)to see what was left of a fort dating back to the early 1800. A few building made of blocks of coral and a big flat spot on top where soldiers stood watch looking for invading boats, sitting up there for hours each day, day after day after month not knowing if anyone was actually coming. It must have taken a lot of time and work to to get all the building materials up the hill plus building the emplacements for the soldiers. I got a few pictures before the camera told me it had a "low battery" and that put an end to that. We walked back down and visited one of the shops on the beach that sells shirts and gifts to the visitors to the beach. Tomorrow, we will do some snorkeling on a wreck that in the middle of the harbor and probably take off around the north end of the island to visit another Maiden Island. Supposed to be great for shell hunting. We'll have to be careful as there are lots of reefs in the area and since we've already gone up on one(back in British Columbia)we don't want to do that again. Lets just hope the winds let up so we won't chew through lots of fuel to get there as it's almost all up wind sailing or straight into the wind.
The picture today is of our broken snubber. It's now been replaced with my last spare.
