Getting ready to go for a while.
13 March 2017 | Charlotte Amalie, US Virgin Islands
Bill/sunny with winds
We're making plans to finally get out of here and head back to the north shore of St.John. Our son found a place in one of the bays that has a great diversity of life in the water. The two of us want to explore it and see what we can find. We've been in Charlotte Amalie for about 10 days and now that the wind is a bit less, we want to get out of here. The three packages we had been expecting finally showed up late this afternoon so I went in and got them. We'd gotten emails from USPS that they were now available for pickup. Once I got there, they could only find two and wondered if I would come back tomorrow or about 1700 today. It was just after 1330 so it would make for a long afternoon sitting around. The clerk said she would go and make one more look and she returned about 10 minutes later with the box. We were good to go.
Next stop, Kmart to get a few more provisions. They sell a Snieders Pretzel pieces in Cheddar cheese at $3.49. At Pueblo, its $5.69. I stocked up with 7 bags as they are good till December. No doubt that they will be long gone by then.
Earlier in the day, I loaded up Puff with four jerry cans for gasoline and two for diesel and headed for the Crown Bay Marina(Tracy stayed on board monitoring the generator). Their prices on diesel are $3.14 per gallon where the rest of the town is over $3.50. First time we've seen a marina be cheaper that regular petrol stations. All of our jerry cans are now full. We got two cans of diesel just to put a bit more in. We're getting down there and I don't want to take any chance of running out. We still plan of running all our fuel through a special filtration system I built when we were in South Africa. The tanks are empty enough to now do it. While I got an early start, the bay was still quite choppy and it made for a really bumpy ride down since I was so light and an even bumpier ride back since i was going into the wind and the swells. Surprisingly, I got home almost dry. Got lucky.
We've just about finished stowing everything as we want to be out of here by 0700 at the latest. The winds don't really come howling till after 0800 and the earlier we leave the better. It's only about 15 miles but it could be a bumpy 15 miles. We may have internet there though I guess we will find out. If you hear from us, we do and if you don't, well, we don't. We think we will be staying out for a week or so. It's been so windy and choppy here, it will be nice to finally be in flat water. We may still have the wind, but we will be in a far more protected harbor.
