We changed yesterday in the early morning and now, instead of going to Grenada to wait our the hurricane season, we are headed for Bonaire farther west in the Caribbean. Same 425 miles give or take. We pulled up the anchor about 0915 and took off with all sails ready to go. We even put the forestaysail back on as it's one of our primary sails. Winds were and still are out of the east to southeast in he mid teens. Low was about 7 knots and high about 22. We pulled up the main and rolled out about 3/4 of the genoa. It was fine and we later pulled up the forestaysail as well, taking in some of the genoa to balance us better. We are making good time having gone about 145 miles in our first 24 hours. Last night, we were having problems keeping on course. With Tracy in the cockpit, I put on a flashlight and life jacket and slowly made my way to the stern. The pin that holds the rudder on he Hydrovane had snapped and the rudder was being dragged behind the boat. Well CRAP!!! Not a nice thing in the daylight and really not a nice thing at night when undersail and about a 5 foot swell. I stripped down to my birthday suit with life jacket and teather, grabber another pin. We rolled in the last of the genoa, started the engine and Tracy put us into the wind . I climbed down the ladder with Tracy above me getting splashed by the exhaust of the engine and the swells coming under our stern(clear up to my neck) She lowered the rudder and I got it on the shaft for the vane and then shoved in the new pin and retaining pin and it was on. Climbed back on board, dried off while Tracy got us back on course and we were off again. The other problem we've been having is the Sargasso weed getting stuck in the prop on the DuoGen. Every hour or so, I have to go out, pull it up out of the water and clean it off. It's our sole source of power right now unless we want to start the engine. All is well but it's been along time since we did an over night trip let along three nights. It normally takes us three nights just to get in the swing of cruising. We should be in some time on Sunday morning at the rate we are going.
