The rest of the day.
30 November 2013 | Penuwasa Boat Yard, Kudat, Malaysia
cloudy with some rain
Here's how the rest of the day went yesterday. I got back at 1330 just as it was starting to rain again. It continued on and off for the rest of the afternoon. We did have some Sun shine and took advantage of it. With the old boot stripe area now sanded, we made up a bunch of Penguard by Jotun to cover and seal the area where the new boot stripe will be going. We also covered all the places we had just laid fiberglass to get it sealed. We were cutting it close, not sure wether we would have enough of the Penguard to get all the way around. We mixed up the paint as Juan went on his 1530 break. It normally lasts 30 minutes but he was back much quicker as we think he got a bit upset that Tracy was putting on the paint. Most of the women we have seen in the yard rarely get involved in restoring their boats. Juan got the roller from Tracy and started in. By the time he got to bow(started in the stern), it was getting evident that we were probably going to run short on paint. We were using the last of the paint we got from Skip and Tallie off "Oryan". Not much left but they didn't need it as they had finished their painting project. We made another batch of the dregs of both cans probably using some of part B(hardener) that was past it's prime. We add some thinner(had to buy 5 liters as that was the smallest they carried) to make it go a bit farther. OK, it's probably not the best job of painting(a few globs of hardener got on the surface)but we did make it to the stern on the opposite side from where we started. This stuff is a two part epoxy paint that seals what ever it covers. It started raining again a while after we got the paint on but it had set long enough that there was no problem(thank goodness). It rained a couple of times during the night.
Juan showed up this morning and we set him to work smoothing off what bumps there were in the Penguard. Some 320 grit sand paper and it will be nice a smooth. It was raining again by 0800. Once the sanding is done, we have to wash the boat to get all the grit and dirt off the hull then put on the bottom tape for the boot stripe and with luck, we will get it done today. If Mother Nature stops bringing on the rain, we might get the first coat of epoxy paint that will seal the entire hull against water getting into the fiberglass. Once that is done, we then will be applying another coat of two part paint that "ties" the actual bottom paint(two coats) to the hull. We are going much farther on this paint job than we have ever done before. With luck, the hull will be in great shape when we finally launch. With all this rain, we can easily see why Malaysia is so green.
The picture today is of the front gate at the Penuwasa Boat Yard. Complete with a "security" guard.
