School discipline in Malaysia

We heard on the Malaysian radio station that we can get about a teacher at a school run by Chinese in Malaysia about how he tried to solve a problem with two students that didn't turn in their homework. Here is a link to the news:

Apparently the students had been caned twice previously and when that didn't do any good, the Chinese teacher went over the top. Try this in the US and watch "it" hit the fan.
Radio is interesting here. The Malaysian station we can get is the only one that seems to be broadcast in English. News at the top of the hour is more about what the government is doing for the people than the news. There are repeated ads for anti corruption officials in Malaysia and they list how many individuals they have caught and prosecuted. All the new is followed by a commentary that is again more propaganda about the government and the religious teachings in the country. But, after the commentary is read, the commentator then tells you the name of the person that wrote it--normally not them--just incase there is a problem with what they are saying. They have repeated ads about keeping your bathroom clean enough for tourists just in case they happen to visit your house. It's interesting to listen to. Fitness and nutrition is stressed along with a spot on how to make compost to reduce waste in the land fills.
We heard back from the embassy that our passports are in transit but no firm date as to when they will arrive. If they get here tomorrow, we will check out and be on our way to Tioman Island off the east coast of mainland Malaysia across the South China Sea. If not, well Friday is the Chinese New Year and a public holiday(along with Saturday) so lots of places will be closed(not sure about the embassy). That would delay our getting out of here till Monday or Tuesday.
Meanwhile we headed back in to the yacht club to do another load of laundry. It normally take about 90 minutes for one load of wash. I checked the machine about 45 minutes after we started it and found it washing away and still a lot more time to do the wash. I returned later and found that there was little water entering the washer. Apparently the area now has no water. One of the local water tanks shifted during a mud slide over the weekend and they stopped pumping water out of the tank. So as of now, there is no water at the yacht club and no idea when they may get some. They did call for a water tanker to bring in water but have no clue as to when it would arrive. Apparently the problem was know for a while but no one put a sign on the washer to not use it. Oh well.
