A few jobs done and off to the Night Market.

04 March 2014 | Puteri Harbor Marina
Sunny and hot.
A few more jobs got done yesterday before it got to hot to continue. I went up to the office to make arrangements to have the electrician come down and hook us up to the marina power grid. We've had little luck in the past with our boat playing nice with other marinas and we had little hope of it working here. I dug out the power cord while Tracy pulled out the step-down transformer(in the process of doing so, she pulled a muscle in her back). We strung the cord to the plug on the dock and the electrician got us all wired up. We had a light on the panel inside that said we had reverse polarity so the electrician reverse the wires and we tried it again. Now the panel said that the wires were correct. I threw the switch and poof, we blew the breaker on the dock. We checked all our connections and tried it again with the same result. OK, no power at this marina. It's strange that when we run the generator(all the power going through the same cords) all runs fine. The batteries get a nice charge, but if we try it at the marina, it doesn't work. So we will be using the generator during our stay here.

Tracy cleaned out one of the lockers in the boat and found some new elastic bungie cord that I can use to replace old worn out ones in the forward locker that hold many of the extra lines we seldom use on Zephyr. Easy change out--unscrew from the wall and put in new sections of the bungie cords and reattach to the walls. Job done. I replaced a bulb in one of the ceiling fixtures that had burned out. By this time, it was too hot to really work outside. It get quite hot here during the day so by 1100, you try and hide out from the Sun.

The marina has a van that takes people to a night market every Tuesday. Since Tracy hurt her back, I went along with 8 other cruisers from the marina. It was huge. Made the one in Kudat look tiny. Hundreds of stall, many with food being cooked and lots more selling every thing from Socks and underwear to shirts, pants, shorts, cooking equipment and toys. You could find just about anything there. Lots more stalls with fruits and veggies and even beef and chicken(whole or parts) with there at good prices. We got there about 1815 and were set to pick us up at 1945. I toured through the entire market. Up looking at one side and down, looking at the other side. I wanted to see everything they had to offer. I was told by a couple of cruisers of a great Chinese restaurant that was in the next block so I walked over and looked at it also. The hardest part is figuring out what they were selling. Many were open buffet with lots of different food in pans. The question is, what is in the pan. I finally went back to the market and bought some Nasi Goreng Ayam. That translates to a piece of fired chicken, with rice, a slice of cucumber and a small bag of soup. All for $4.50(about $1.50US. I bought another order of rice from another vendor that asked me if I wanted it spicy. "Sure" was my response of course. He piled on a nice spoonful of what looked to be Sambal which is a combination of hot red peppers, onion, garlic, sometimes small tomatoes and some sugar, all put through a blender to pulverize it into a thick gruel. As you walked through the market, there were people selling drinks from big containers--Guava, Orange, and many I had no idea what they were. I got one of the orange drinks and found a nice alley where I could sit and eat. With the Nasi Goreng Ayam meal, they included a small bag of what looked to be a type of sweet and sour sauce. I tried it first and it did taste kind of sweet so I poured it over the rice. One of the stalls had given me a small spoon so I dug in. What I thought to be the Sweet and Sour sauce ended up being more of the Sambal. I had a ton of very spicy rice. I pulled the chicken off the bones and munched on the spicy rice and once done with that, I dug into the second serving of rice from the second stall. It was even spicier. My mouth was on fire. Needless to say, I finished the orange drink quite quickly as I finished the meal. I LOVE spicy food so it wasn't a problem eating it but I got another glass of the orange drink a few minutes later just to try and cool off my taste buds. I bought some donuts from one of the stalls to take back to Zephyr and to try and cool off my mouth. I was surprised to see donuts covered in Sambal in the same stall. Malaysians have tough mouths if they eat this much of Sambal. Since we had just gone shopping for fruits and veggies on Sunday, I passed on what was offered though it look quite good. The only thing I bought from one of the stalls was a new wallet. My last one was on it's last legs and since I found one(supposedly made by Giorgio Armani)how could I pass it up at just $8.00US! We all piled back in the van at 1945 and made the quick trip back to the marina. Another day gone.

OK, sounds like a restaurant I want to try. Nothing wrong with a skull on the sign.
